Hong Kong’s Smart Government Innovation Lab has sustained its release of solutions develops by its various incubatees.
Recently, another one of its supported firms has developed a solution which is now ready to be acquired by other firms, government agencies and academic institutions.
Solution description
Considering the large and increasing number of construction projects conducted in the HK, there is a growing need to develop innovative methods to monitor the safety of the workers at construction sites automatically.
The solution aims to automatically detect the uses of construction helmets (e.g., whether the construction worker wears the helmet or not) by analysing the construction surveillance images. Based on the collected images, the solution first detects the object of interest (i.e., a construction worker) and analyses whether the worker is wearing a helmet or not by using computer vision and machine learning techniques.
Application Areas
The solution can be applied in the areas of:
- City Management
- Development
- Employment and Labour
- Environment
- Infrastructure
Technologies Used
The solution employs the following technologies:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Data Analytics
- Deep Learning
- Machine Learning
- Natural Language Processing
- Video Analytics
Use Case
Imagine you want to monitor a vast construction site or a large factory to see whether people wear their safety gear. Monitoring people 24/7 across a large area is almost impossible with human operators. The firm’s technology can detect whether people were wearing their safety helmets and generate an alert in case they weren’t.
Previous tech solutions
In February 2020, OpenGov Asia reported on a similar design in smart glasses. The MAD Gaze smart glasses were in several models, including monocular, binocular, integrated, split, considering customers with different needs.
Integrated smart glasses, battery memory, etc. are installed in the smart glasses, operate with Android system, compatible with most Android apps on the market; support Wi-fi and Bluetooth. The integrated smart glasses are not subject to any restrictions.
They are completely independent smart wearable product without connecting to a computer or mobile phone. The built-in optical sensor can be automatically or manually adjusted regardless of the scene environment.
MAD Gaze smart glasses can be used with a variety of different operation modes. With gesture control and voice recognition, users can free their hands, which is different from the experience of using other devices.
Smart glasses are an alternative to mobile phones and tablets. In addition to being lightweight, they are more suitable for busy urbanites and can handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
The latest GLOW series is split-type smart glasses and MR mixed reality binocular smart glasses for the consumer market launched by MAD Gaze.
It has changed the first three technology-rich design styles of MAD Gaze and replaced it with a design similar to ordinary sunglasses.
With the ability to choose between two different choices of the optical display, weighing 75 grams, foldable, the smart glasses are currently the lightest of all binocular smart glasses.
They also intelligently integrate fashion, lightness, portability, comfort and technology. These wearable devices are simple plug and play. They directly connect to the mobile phone, and power and content are supplied by the mobile phone.
About the Smart Government Innovation Lab
In 2018, the Government established the Smart Government Innovation Lab to explore hi-tech products such as AI and relevant technologies, including machine learning, big data analytics, cognitive systems and intelligent agent, as well as blockchain and robotics from firms, especially local start-ups.
The Lab is always on the lookout for innovation and technology (I&T) solutions that are conducive to enhancing public services or their operational effectiveness.
I&T suppliers are encouraged to regularly visit the Lab’s website to check on the current business and operational needs in public service delivery and propose innovative solutions or product suggestions to address them.
