The Nusantara Capital City (IKN) development in East Kalimantan Province is a physical infrastructure project and a significant initiative emphasising the importance of technology and information in creating an innovative and sustainable capital city. The Minister of Communication and Information, Budi Arie Setiadi, underscored this point, explaining that the sustainability of IKN’s development heavily depends on how technology can be optimally utilised to support various aspects of life in the new capital.
After accompanying President Joko Widodo and President-Elect Prabowo Subianto on their visit to monitor the progress of IKN’s development, Minister Budi Arie highlighted that information technology will serve as the backbone of managing a modern smart city at IKN. He noted that a connected and high-tech system would enable IKN to deliver more efficient public services, be environmentally friendly, and support the growth of Indonesia’s digital economy.
The development of IKN presents significant challenges and opportunities in digitalisation. Digital transformation is crucial in creating an innovative and sustainable city. Through the Ministry of Communication and Information, the government is fully committed to ensuring that information technology not only supports the efficiency of governance but also facilitates the daily lives of the people who will live and work in IKN.
One of the primary aspects of this digital transformation is the development of advanced technological infrastructure. IKN is designed to be one of the most connected cities in the world, where every element of the city—from transportation, healthcare services, and education to government administration—will be integrated through a robust information technology network. This integration will allow the city to operate efficiently, reduce energy waste, and minimise environmental impact.
Moreover, the development of IKN is also expected to catalyse the growth of Indonesia’s digital economy. By building advanced technological infrastructure, IKN can attract investment in the technology sector and startups, create new job opportunities, and support innovations that will strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global digital arena. The presence of IKN as a government centre that also functions as a technology hub will encourage the creation of a dynamic and innovative digital ecosystem.
In addition to infrastructure, another focus of IKN’s digital transformation is the development of a skilled workforce in the technology field. The government has planned various training and education programmes to enhance the digital skills of the population, particularly those who will reside and work in IKN. This ensures that the community is a technology user and can contribute to technological development and innovation in IKN.
On the same occasion, Prabowo affirmed his commitment to continuing the development of IKN in line with President Joko Widodo’s vision. This commitment indicates that the leadership transition will not alter the overarching direction of IKN’s development but will instead strengthen efforts to create a capital city that is truly prepared to face future challenges.
Technology and information play a crucial role in the overall development of IKN. From advanced technological infrastructure to human resource development, these elements contribute to realising IKN as an innovative, connected, sustainable capital city. Through the Ministry of Communication and Information, the government strives to ensure that digital transformation in IKN proceeds smoothly so that this capital city not only becomes the seat of government but also serves as a model for a modern and sustainable city of the future in Indonesia.
Digital transformation in IKN is not just about leveraging existing technology but also about creating innovations that can be adopted by other cities in Indonesia and even around the world. In this way, IKN is envisioned to become a model for developing future cities that prioritise sustainability, efficiency, and the well-being of its inhabitants.
