The University of Tsukuba, Japan, has made a groundbreaking move by inaugurating its first international branch campus in Malaysia, marking a significant milestone in the global higher education landscape. The University of Tsukuba, Malaysia (UTMy) was officially opened today at Wisma R&D Universiti Malaya (UM), reflecting a new era of academic collaboration focused on technology, artificial intelligence and upskilling.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir underscored the importance of this development in the context of technological advancement and workforce development. “The launch of UTMy highlights Malaysia’s growing stature in the global higher education arena, particularly in areas like AI and technology.
This new branch campus signifies a major step in integrating cutting-edge technological education and upskilling efforts,” he remarked. Dr Zambry emphasised that this initiative not only underscores Malaysia’s commitment to advancing in these critical fields but also strengthens the bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Japan.
The establishment of UTMy is a culmination of efforts that began in 2018, aiming to create a robust platform for advancing technological and digital education. The new campus is set to offer programs that focus on the intersection of AI, data science, and technology, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to addressing global challenges through innovative education.
UTMy’s School of Transdisciplinary Science and Design is at the core of this initiative, offering a diverse curriculum that integrates technology and AI. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in data science, natural sciences, humanities, and Japanese language and culture.
This interdisciplinary approach is intended to prepare students to tackle complex global issues such as artificial intelligence applications, health technology, disaster prevention, and environmental sustainability.
The emphasis on upskilling is a central theme of the UTMy initiative. Dr Zambry highlighted that the partnership with the University of Tsukuba is not only about introducing advanced technological programs but also about equipping the workforce with the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
“By integrating innovative teaching methodologies from Japan and focusing on critical areas such as AI and data science, UTMy will play a crucial role in developing a skilled workforce ready to address the challenges of the future,” he said.
Strategic partnerships with leading technology firms and educational institutions are a key component of this initiative. These collaborations are expected to enhance the curriculum with the latest technological advancements and practical insights, ensuring that students receive a cutting-edge education.
The joint statement from UTMy and UM highlights that the strategic location of UTMy within UM’s Wisma R&D Building symbolises their commitment to fostering a dynamic and synergistic academic environment.
The campus will feature 14 full-time faculty members with expertise spanning various fields, including life and environment sciences, information technology, comparative literature, political science, and subcultures. This diverse expertise is aimed at providing students with a well-rounded education that prepares them for impactful roles in both Malaysian and global contexts.
University of Tsukuba President Professor Nagata Kyosuke, speaking at the opening ceremony, highlighted the importance of a transdisciplinary approach to education. “Addressing global challenges requires more than traditional academic disciplines; it necessitates innovative thinking and a blend of knowledge from multiple fields,” he stated.
Professor Nagata expressed confidence that UTMy’s approach would not only benefit students in Malaysia but also contribute to global advancements through a focus on AI, technology, and transdisciplinary education.
The launch of the University of Tsukuba’s branch campus in Malaysia represents a significant step forward in enhancing technological education and upskilling. By focusing on AI, technology, and innovative teaching methodologies, UTMy is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of higher education and addressing global challenges effectively.
