CHRYSALIS is positioned as a key player in advancing technological developments in the creative industry, offering a dynamic space where artistic innovation can thrive. By leveraging the university’s strengths in both arts and sciences, the Hub aims to be a transformative force in the realm of art technology, supporting not just creative experimentation, but also the translation of art tech concepts into real-world applications. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the revitalisation of Hong Kong’s creative industries by creating a pipeline of art tech innovation.
The hub was launched with a formal ceremony attended by several prominent figures in the region’s arts and culture landscape. The event included remarks from key officials, including representatives from the local government, the university’s leadership, and other notable cultural organisations. A central message conveyed was the importance of art technology in the broader context of Hong Kong’s development as a global centre for arts and culture.
At the ceremony, the university’s leadership emphasised the potential of CHRYSALIS to bring together diverse stakeholders from the fields of technology, arts, and entrepreneurship. They expressed optimism that the hub would become a central point of collaboration between artists, innovators, and investors, providing the tools and resources necessary to transform creative ideas into viable technological solutions. By supporting transdisciplinary exploration, CHRYSALIS aims to encourage collaboration across multiple sectors, including government and industry, creating a fertile ground for both artistic and technological breakthroughs.
The hub offers state-of-the-art infrastructure, which is key to this vision. CHRYSALIS is equipped with a range of cutting-edge facilities designed to support the development and application of art technology. Among these is a Full Dome Theatre, which features advanced projection systems capable of delivering immersive digital experiences. This facility is expected to provide a new medium for artists and technologists to collaborate, offering audiences a uniquely immersive artistic experience through the integration of visual and auditory technologies.
Another highlight is the Mechatronics Studio, which provides access to advanced 3D printing, scanning, and haptic devices. This space enables the creation of high-quality 3D models, allowing artists to craft and produce industrial-grade products. By integrating engineering and creative processes, the studio supports the translation of artistic visions into tangible, high-end outputs. Additionally, the hub will soon offer a Sound-Recording and Mixing Studio, equipped with advanced musical instruments and technologies to support innovation in digital music production and AI-generated music.
In addition to these facilities, the hub features a Materials Discovery Corner, which serves as a curated library of materials for experimentation. This resource is expected to play a critical role in enabling artists and technologists to explore new mediums and techniques, further supporting innovation in the art tech space. Complementing this is a multipurpose co-working area, designed to foster collaboration and idea-sharing among artists, entrepreneurs, and industry professionals.
CHRYSALIS is also envisioned as a space for fostering strategic partnerships. One such collaboration was announced at the hub’s launch between the university, a prominent UK-based studio, and Hong Kong Ballet. Together, they plan to create a post-cinematic choreographic installation, combining digital imaging, choreography, AI, and interactive audience experiences. This project highlights the hub’s potential to lead the development of new, cross-disciplinary art forms that blend technology with traditional performance arts.
