Adopting Artificial Intelligence for Education in Indonesia

Artificial intelligence (AI) has grown in popularity in today’s world. It refers to the simulation of natural intelligence in machines that have been programmed to learn and mimic human actions. These machines can learn and perform human-like tasks as they gain experience. As artificial intelligence technology advances, it will have a significant impact on our quality of life. It is only natural that everyone today wants to connect with AI technology in some way, whether as an end-user or by pursuing a career in AI.

In general, AI and digital technology are assisting in the removal of barriers and the expansion of educational opportunities for learners all over the world. Intelligent web search and recommendation engines can help students find the information and resources they need to advance their education.

To address this, another Indonesian Ed-tech start-up recently developed an AI-based system for improving students’ general knowledge in three fundamental subjects: mathematics, verbal logic, and English. The AI system has two main features, one of which is the ability to practise with hundreds of thousands of questions from three main concentration branches, such as verbal logic, mathematics, and English, which can be adjusted to each individual’s level of understanding. Meanwhile, the other feature provides a variety of insightful knowledge such as philosophy, basic sciences and history that can be used to support and expand users’ insights and perspectives.

The AI system will automatically determine the user’s basic level of ability based on these responses by calculating an algorithm that is designed to be as accurate as possible. The accuracy with which users answer will determine their position on the scoreboard.

According to the Chief Education Officer of the AI company, one of the most common problems encountered in Indonesia is a basic understanding of the community that has not been fine-tuned because it is too focused on specific sciences. Furthermore, each person’s ability differs from one another. This is why subject matter provision cannot be deployed evenly because each individual must learn with their respective abilities.

“We equipped this AI system with a ranking and scoring scheme to ignite a competitive attitude in every user. Through the gamification approach, we hope that users will share their values on social media, and invite friends to compete in a positive way,” he said in an official statement.

OpenGov Asia had reported that in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo), the Director-General of Higher Education formed the National 1000 Start-up Movement with a target of 100,000 students involved in start-up development by 2022. Later, the team that passes the start-up development selection will receive more intensive guidance so that they can last long and can enter the Kedaireka platform or campus business incubator.

This discourse is part of the government’s efforts to encourage the spread of more massive and quality start-ups in the development of the digital industry. The plan of the Directorate General of Higher Education to make this compulsory Digital Start-up course is in line with the Independent Campus programme and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology’s initiative to build the 1000 Start-up Movement.

This movement is a forum for mentoring and empowering the world of Digital start-ups in Indonesia. The 1000 Start-up Digital programme will be packaged in several stages from the basic level until it is ready to be tested to enter the market.

There are numerous avenues for the use of artificial intelligence in education, with numerous stakeholders involved, and the market currently offers solutions for adults, children, tutors, and educational establishments. AI-based systems can analyse massive amounts of data, and the use of artificial intelligence in education encompasses a wide range that includes training, communications, administration, and resource management.
