Singapore – The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and local start-up I.O.T. Workz Pte. Ltd (I.O.T. Workz) is pleased to announce a joint collaboration to develop and productise an asset tracking and localisation system that can be adopted for indoor and outdoor applications based on a sensor network that is being powered wirelessly.
Founded and based in Singapore, I.O.T. Workz is a multi-dimensional Internet-of-Things (IoT) smart solutions provider and the company has licensed A*STAR’s wirelessly powered localisation system for asset tracking to create various practical applications. Combining A*STAR’s research capabilities and expertise in user interface application development with I.O.T. Workz’s strengths in solutions integration, both parties have jointly developed an asset tracking system that can automatically track the physical location of hospitals’ wheelchairs, which typically range in the hundreds per hospital.

This asset tracking system has been tested and subsequently deployed on 150 wheelchairs at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) since April 2021, across common areas such as wheelchair parking zones, car park lobbies as well as wheelchair parks outside Specialist Outpatient Clinics. Wireless tags are attached as beacons on the wheelchairs, and the tags send location information to network devices installed in strategic positions within the hospital.
The data is then presented on a mobile application, and hospital staff such as Patient Service Associates (PSA) can easily monitor and track the location of wheelchairs. They are notified when the number of wheelchairs at designated key areas are running low and need replenishing, as well as which areas they can find excess wheelchairs. This has improved staff productivity and helps ensure the constant availability of wheelchairs for patients.
The application’s intuitive digital dashboard is easy to use and shows which wheelchairs are due for servicing at a glance, which further enhances the overall productivity and safety of the hospital’s wheelchairs.
This project was supported with Gap Funding from A*STAR’s Enterprise division, where funding and resources are given to support the translation of research into impactful new products and services that benefit the economy and society and to support the commercialisation of new technologies based on licensed A*STAR technologies. Besides tracking wheelchairs in hospitals, other potential applications of the wirelessly powered localisation system include industrial IoT, smart buildings and environmental monitoring.
The Technology Behind the Wirelessly Powered Localisation System for Asset Tracking
The asset tracking system includes a Radio Frequency (RF) energy-harvesting interface to recharge the battery, a power management unit, and ZigBee System-on-a-Chip (SoC) to support data connectivity.
A*STAR’s Institute of Microelectronics (IME) created a miniaturised antenna solution for Radio Frequency (RF) energy harvesting with higher sensitivity than commercially available solutions. By applying the RF energy harvesting capability to the sensor nodes or end terminals, the system aids to extend the battery lifetime and improve operational efficiency. This is complemented by ZigBee networking protocols and firmware from A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I²R).

The asset tracking system leverages this differentiating technology with Zigbee Mesh Topology to provide coarse localisation of over 300 existing wheelchairs in KTPH’s premises, further enhancing the engineering to provide long-range transmission. Since the end-to-end solution relies on both hardware and software, these capabilities work synergistically for power-efficient operation, providing a wireless-powered solution for asset tracking and monitoring, including predictive maintenance. With this advancement, end users can expect to power the system for a longer duration and attain greater cost-effectiveness. Such systems are useful for applications where human intervention is limited, such as in chemical plants.
“IME, alongside other A*STAR research entities, works with local SMEs to address industry challenges by leveraging innovative technologies. This wireless-powered sensor technology will aid the adoption of IoT across various sectors such as machine health monitoring in heavy industries, microclimate sensing in agriculture, smart home solutions, and in manufacturing plants where limited human access is preferred due to hazardous conditions,” said Mr. Terence Gan, Executive Director of A*STAR’s IME.
“Together with A*STAR, supported by KTPH and the interns of Singapore Polytechnic, we are the first to provide localization trackers with over-the-air wireless charging. The sensor network we have developed is further extendable to cover all areas in the hospital to achieve active tracking and monitoring of wheelchairs that will improve the productivity and safety of these hospital assets that are used by patients on a daily basis. Our collaboration with A*STAR has enhanced our service offerings, allowing us to target new market segments and create new opportunities for us to partner local manufacturers to develop new solutions. We look forward to further develop our long-term working relationship with A*STAR to further add value to the technology and manufacturing ecosystem in Singapore”, said Mr Shawn Koh, Founder of I.O.T. Workz.
“At KTPH, we are always looking for opportunities to improve our patient experience through engineering innovation. A large majority of our patients require wheelchairs to move around KTPH. Wheelchairs are parked at multiple locations for our patients’ convenience and will need regular maintenance. Previously, our staff may have to spend more than 30 minutes scouring for ‘lost’ wheelchairs, but now their real time location is available. This enables our Patient Relations Associates and maintenance colleagues to top up wheelchairs where needed, and to bring in any wheelchairs for timely maintenance. The time saved can now be used to care for patients,” said Ms Yen Tan, Chief Operating Officer of KTPH.
“Given the success of implementation, this system could be scaled to track other high movement equipment. We are also exploring areas like recording temperature data, monitoring lighting conditions or controlling external devices. By leveraging on modern technology to provide innovative solutions, we can improve the efficiency and productivity of our hospital’s overall operations and processes.”

While the vision of unlocking Indonesia’s potential through digital transformation is promising, some challenges must be addressed to ensure successful implementation; and one of the primary challenges is the digital divide.

As Indonesia steers towards embracing digital transformation through skills-first learning, the trajectory of its economic and social development is poised to undergo a significant shift. Amid the relentless surge of cybersecurity threats, governments and technology agencies must embrace heightened awareness and implement meticulous data protection strategies. The escalating cyber threats necessitate a proactive stance, where staying one step ahead is crucial to safeguarding crucial information assets.
In this dynamic digital landscape, where information is a commodity, governments must acknowledge the evolving nature of cyber threats and continuously fortify their cybersecurity measures. Rapid technological advancements bring new challenges, requiring adaptive and innovative solutions to balance potential vulnerabilities.
Collaboration between government bodies, regulatory agencies, and technology experts is paramount in fostering a collective defence against cyber threats towards data privacy. Sharing insights, intelligence, and best practices creates a robust cybersecurity ecosystem capable of anticipating and mitigating emerging risks.
To secure public information and ensure data privacy, Mr Prasert Chandraruangthong, the Minister of Digital Economy and Society, has initiated measures to combat leaks and the illicit trade of personal information. Recognising the situation’s urgency, the Minister outlined a comprehensive plan divided into three periods—30 days, six months, and 12 months.
During the first 30-day period, the Office of the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDC) established the Personal Data Violation Surveillance Centre to investigate public information disclosures promptly. The operations conducted this November inspected 3,119 government and private sector agencies. The PDPC detected data leaks in 1,158 cases, leading to corrective actions taken by the agencies in 781 instances. Notably, three issues of personal data trading were uncovered, prompting investigations and prosecutions in collaboration with The Police Technology Crime Investigation Headquarters.
Simultaneously, the PDPC, under the directive of the Police Technology Crime Investigation Headquarters, expedited inspections of 9,000 agencies within the next 30 days. This initiative targeted government agencies deemed critical information infrastructure (CII), including those in the energy, public health, government services, finance, and banking sectors.
During the inspections, the cybersecurity systems of 91 agencies were examined. Of these, 21 were identified as having high levels of risk, prompting corrective actions by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).
The third measure involves collaborative efforts between the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), NBTC, and relevant agencies such as the Thai Chamber of Commerce, Federation of Thai Industries, Thai Bankers Association, Thai Life Assurance Association, Thai Hotel Association, and the media sector network. The objective is to raise awareness about personal data protection and prevent potential risks from inadequate security procedures. This includes knowledge-sharing sessions on maintaining cybersecurity through Cybersecurity Awareness Training. The collaborative initiative emphasises preventing intrusion from outsiders, securing system settings, and enforcing the law within the purview of the authorities.
For the subsequent six-month period, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society and the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) will expedite efforts to block illegal trading of personal information. Offenders will be actively pursued, prosecuted, and arrested to ensure a swift and effective response in safeguarding the privacy and security of individuals’ data.
This strategy underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging digital technology to fortify data protection measures and create a safer online environment for all citizens by partnering with other entities.

OpenGov Asia reported that Tāhūrangi, the Ministry of Education’s new online platform for curriculum content, teaching resources, and news, went live recently. Parents and caregivers can access resources and information to help students with their learning. Tāhūrangi’s content aims to encourage effective teaching and learning in various educational contexts. This includes support for the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum (Te Whāriki: He Whāriki mātauranga mō ngā mokopuna o Aotearoa), Māori-medium schools (Te Marautanga o Aotearoa), and the New Zealand Curriculum. Additionally, the platform plans to expand its offerings to include resources for kindergarten schools (Te Whāriki a Te Kōhanga Reo).
“We know that finding suitable teaching resources is harder for people than it has to be. The new platform is designed to make that experience quicker and easier,” the Ministry of Education said in a statement.

Vietnamese companies are actively implementing several measures to ready themselves for an artificial intelligence (AI)-centric future. According to an industry survey released recently, 99% of organisations have either established a robust AI strategy or are currently in the process of developing one.
Over 87% of organisations are categorised as either fully or partially prepared, with only 2% falling into the category of not prepared. This indicated a significant level of focus by C-Suite executives and IT leadership, possibly influenced by the unanimous attitude among respondents that the urgency to implement AI technologies in their organisations has heightened in the past six months. Notably, IT infrastructure and cybersecurity emerged as the foremost priority areas for AI deployments. However, only 27% of organisations in Vietnam are fully prepared to deploy and leverage AI-powered technologies.
The survey included over 8,000 global companies and was created in response to the rapid adoption of AI, a transformative shift affecting nearly every aspect of business and daily life. The report emphasises the readiness of companies to leverage and implement AI, revealing significant gaps in crucial business pillars and infrastructures that pose substantial risks in the near future.
The survey was an assessment of companies that were examined on 49 different metrics across these six pillars to determine a readiness score for each, as well as an overall readiness score for the respondents’ organisation. Each indicator was weighted individually based on its relative importance in achieving readiness for the respective pillar. It classified organisations into four groups—Pacesetters (fully prepared), Chasers (moderately prepared), Followers (limited preparedness), and Laggards (unprepared)—based on their overall scores.
Although AI adoption has been steadily advancing for decades, the recent strides in Generative AI, coupled with its increased public accessibility in the past year, have heightened awareness of the challenges, transformations, and new possibilities presented by this technology.
Despite 92% of respondents acknowledging that AI will have a substantial impact on their business operations, it has raised concerns regarding data privacy and security. The findings showed that companies experience the most challenges when it comes to leveraging AI alongside their data. 68% of respondents acknowledged that this is due to data existing in silos across their organisations.
As per an industry expert, in the race to implement AI solutions, companies should assess where investments are needed to ensure their infrastructure can best support the demands of AI workloads. The country is working to foster a skilled workforce in AI to actively contribute to the expansion of Vietnam’s AI ecosystem and its sustainability. As per data from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) last year, there were over 1,600 individuals in Vietnam who were either studying or engaged in AI-related fields. However, the actual number of professionals actively working in AI within Vietnam was relatively low, with only around 700 individuals, including 300 experts, involved in this specialised work. Considering the substantial IT workforce of nearly 1 million employees in Vietnam, the availability of AI human resources remains relatively limited.
To tackle this challenge, businesses can recruit AI experts globally or collaborate with domestic and international training institutions to enhance the skills of existing talent. They can also partner with universities to offer advanced degrees in data science and AI for the current engineering workforce, fostering synergy between academic institutions and industry demands.
