Digital Transformation Initiatives in the Philippine Education Sector

Through data and technology, digital transformation entails improving a company’s core business processes to effectively meet customer expectations. Students, faculty, staff and graduates may be the target consumers in the educational sector, and both students and professors may benefit from digital transformation in schools.

After more than a year, digital tools and platforms have evolved to meet the rapidly changing needs of teachers and students, bringing new life to the virtual classroom experience. To showcase innovative yet accessible tools and learning platforms designed to help schools navigate their digital journey, a Philippine network provider has launched the second season of its digital webinar, in partnership with key stakeholders and industry experts.

The webinar series, which recently completed its fifth instalment, is intended to educate the education industry on the numerous benefits that digitalisation brings to schools by ensuring the continuity of quality education. Among the different network provider’s solutions that were introduced to help improve the experience of online teaching and learning were:

  • Digital tools that help schools keep in touch with their staff, faculty, students, and parents on a mass scale through bulk SMS. Schools may also opt to use a masked name instead of a number so that people know the messages are legitimately from the school.
  • A cloud computing platform that would help schools to save on steep maintenance costs of on-premises equipment by migrating their data from physical servers to a cloud server. The platform also gives users the freedom to scale computing resources up or down as needed.
  • A Learning Management System that equips educators with a wide array of customisable easy-to-use tools, allowing them to design and deliver courses that give students a unique and exciting learning experience.
  • An online learning workspace that are tailored for teachers and students to collaborate, streamline instruction and keep learning safe.

“We know that the pandemic has forced teachers and students to swiftly and abruptly shift from face-to-face classes to online learning.” said the network provider’s Segment Head for Education. “To support schools in this transition, our company is intent on equipping them with the right knowledge and technology tools to meet the demands of the new education system and to still thrive in this new setup.

“We don’t want anyone to be left behind, so we are doing all we can to provide what they need for their digital transformation. We want to give schools, teachers, and students the quality education they deserve,” he concluded. He also disclosed that the company has lined up 10 learning webinars for the education sector focused on helping educators in the face of challenges brought on by the pandemic.

In line with providing digital transformation in the education sector, OpenGov Asia reported that the education department’s undersecretary also hinted at a future DepEd project, which aims to update and pattern DepEd TV after streaming services to allow learners to study their learning materials at their own pace. Those who need more time and repetition can easily review and go back to all the lessons, while those who learn at a faster pace can access new lessons and other lessons outside of their grade levels, he said.

With that kind of interface, the country’s education curriculum can adapt to the needs of the entire nation and even the world. Then, basic education becomes relevant and liberating for it serves what the nation needs and what the world needs.

As a staunch advocate of quality education for all Filipinos, the network provider continues to form alliances with various stakeholders and organisations to assist schools and academic institutions in reinventing learning through technology. Many countries around the world do not have access to tools and resources in the educational sector. E-learning applications and platforms, when thoughtfully integrated, are a cost-effective solution to this problem.

By digitising the learning experience, both students and teachers can improve their abilities to engage in an active educational process. Digital transformation in education can be used in a variety of ways, including online learning, intelligent schooling, student assessments, personalised learning experiences, and online exams.
