DOST-NRCP’s Interactive Gateway to Siargao’s Biodiversity

In a major initiative, the Department of Science and Technology-National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP) has developed an engaging game application titled “Siargao Flora & Fauna Puzzle”.

This offline game, reminiscent of popular titles like Candy Crush, takes a unique approach by introducing new animal species at different levels, providing an entertaining and educational experience inspired by the rich biodiversity of Siargao Island.

The game features a captivating “Siargao Journal” that allows players to explore the habitat and behaviour of Siargao’s natural treasures, including unique species like the Mindanao Flying Tree, Paka Gadikit and Platymantis Paka.

Endorsed by Representative Francisco Jose Matugas II of Surigao del Norte 1st Congressional District, the app aims to inspire children and parents alike to learn more about the diverse flora and fauna thriving in Siargao.

The success of the Siargao Flora & Fauna Puzzle underscores the positive impact of DOST-NRCP’s initiatives in promoting basic research nationwide. This innovative game not only educates but also highlights the importance of evidence-based research studies in shaping policies and legislation, a sentiment echoed by Senator Francis N. Tolentino during the 2024 DOST budget deliberation.

Looking ahead, a diverse group of stakeholders, including researchers, scientists, engineers, policymakers, scholars, academicians, entrepreneurs, technology enthusiasts, and government officials, will convene at the 2024 Annual Scientific Conference and the 91st NRCP General Assembly scheduled for March 12, 2024, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

The Philippines has taken a proactive stance in fostering engagement among all stakeholders, particularly emphasising sustainability and biodiversity. With a keen focus on environmental awareness and education, initiatives like the “Siargao Flora & Fauna Puzzle” game application by the Department of Science and Technology-National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP) exemplify the nation’s commitment to involving various segments of society in these crucial discussions.

Earlier, the NRCP launched its science workbook and mobile game app, “Siargao Flora & Fauna Puzzle,” in Del Carmen, Siargao Island, celebrating the International Day of Mangrove Ecosystem. It aimed to make science engaging for children, featuring a biodiversity science workbook with interactive activities and a game app introducing new animal species.

Del Carmen’s Mayor, Alfredo M. Coro II, highlighted the town’s natural beauty, endorsing the app for children to explore Siargao’s rich biodiversity. The event showcased NRCP’s commitment to science education and environmental awareness.

The science workbook and game app originated from a biodiversity assessment in Del Carmen, Siargao. The launch marked a significant step in promoting science education and environmental awareness among Siargao’s youth.

As OpenGov Asia reported, the recent 2024 Handa Pilipinas event organised by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) aligns seamlessly with the nation’s commitment to cutting-edge solutions, as exemplified by initiatives like the “Siargao Flora & Fauna Puzzle” game application.

This forum, held at the Philippine Congress, not only explored disaster risk reduction but in detail also highlighted the importance of investing in advanced technologies to combat natural hazards. The DOST showcased its agencies’ technologies, fostering awareness among stakeholders and gaining support from legislators like Representative Carlito M. Marquez.

This holistic approach, addressing both environmental education and disaster prevention, reflects the Philippines’ dedication to a resilient and sustainable future.
