Digital transformation is a key element of Indonesia’s strategic vision for the future. In line with this focus, the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information has launched the Indonesia Digital Vision 2045, which complements the Indonesia Emas 2045 initiative.
This ambitious plan aims to position Indonesia as the world’s fifth-largest economy and achieve an economic growth rate of 6.2% by 2045. By embracing digital technologies, Indonesia seeks to enhance economic competitiveness and pave the way for a more connected and prosperous future.
However, Indonesia faces significant hurdles on its path to digital transformation due to widespread reliance on outdated legacy systems. These inflexible and costly systems hinder the adoption of modern technology, compromise cybersecurity, and impede progress toward Indonesia’s digital objectives.
A report by the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Informatics revealed that over 60% of cyber incidents affecting state-owned enterprises and government agencies in 2023 were attributed to vulnerabilities within legacy systems. Over 40 Indonesian agencies were impacted by a cyberattack on the country’s data centres.
These incidents highlight the urgent need for a strategic approach to modernising technology while maintaining cybersecurity. Ultimately, transitioning to more secure technologies not only reduce costs but also enhances security and adaptability.
So, how can Indonesia overcome the barriers posed by legacy systems and enhance its digital transformation efforts?
Investing in Modernisation
Transitioning from legacy systems to modern, scalable technologies is essential. This involves not only updating infrastructure but also integrating new applications that support agile and efficient operations. Modernisation enables organisations to streamline processes, improve performance, and stay competitive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Embracing Open-Source Solutions
Leveraging open-source technologies provides a practical solution to many challenges associated with legacy systems. Open-source solutions offer flexibility and security, addressing the limitations of outdated systems. According to Red Hat, companies leveraging open-source solutions can achieve up to 50% lower total costs compared to proprietary software alternatives.
Open-source platforms also provide a collaborative environment for identifying and addressing security threats. This technology enhances flexibility and adaptability, making it easier to integrate with existing systems and adopt innovations that drive digital transformation.
Strengthening Cybersecurity Measures
With modernised systems and open-source solutions, Indonesia can implement advanced cybersecurity protocols to safeguard against emerging threats. Modern systems are equipped with robust security features.
Open-source platforms enhance security by providing transparent code for swift vulnerability patches, community-driven updates, and transparency, thereby enhancing Indonesia’s digital infrastructure and defence against cyberattacks for public sector, government linked company and enterprises.
