Cloud Technology’s Vital Role in the Evolving Pedagogy of the Philippines’ Education Sector

A Platform For Collaboration

OpenGov Asia is pleased to invite you to an exclusive OpenGov Virtual Breakfast Insight that aims to provide the latest information on the benefits of cloud technology to make the Philippines’ educational sector more resilient and stable in meeting future challenges. This event is by invitation only and will be an interactive session with decision-makers in the Philippine educational sector.

A robust educational sector provides a seamless convergence between a nation’s social development and economic growth

The Philippines’ educational sector was hit hard by pandemic prevention lockdowns considered one of the longest in the world. An estimated 28 million learners across all academic levels stayed home, with just a small fraction able to continue through online learning. While there are now ongoing trials to bring back physical classes, the Department of Education (DepEd) is also encouraging educational institutions to focus on greater technology integration to meet the needs for a blended learning model.

The UNICEF Philippines Representative Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov reported that Philippine schools were closed for more than a year in 2020 when the pandemic started, resulting in learning loss, mental distress, and the heightened risk of dropping out. While many dismissed this as something that could be recouped after the pandemic was over, UNICEF evidence shows the importance of early solutions to address learning gaps.

Education is essential for training individuals for the technical and scientific knowledge society requires in today’s information society. In the process, education increases the overall intellectual capacity and raises society’s shared culture and standards. The use of cloud technology raises the bar for technology integration and will allow the use of even synchronous blended learning and virtual labs.

Increased Domination in Today’s Information Society

Making the most of information technology is a surefire way of strengthening and increasing information production, storage and sharing. Further, it provides the best strategy for resilience in the education sector because it is one thing to increase the diversity of information produced and quite another matter to ensure steady and wider access to an effective learning system.

Cloud computing technology opens up new pedagogies to overcome distance, reduces reliance on teachers’ coaching, and accommodates students’ learning pace. The technology allows efficiency and resilience for educational institutions to surpass challenges to more traditional models of learning. Moreover, the technology can customise students’ learning experiences, offer various advanced learning tools and systems like the virtual labs and facilitate integration with various platforms.

 Customisation

Using cloud technology for education enables organisations to deploy data analytics that immediately customises the learning pace and process to a student’s needs. Artificial Intelligence (AI) in educational platforms is highly adjustable and may be tailored to suit students’ emotions and preferences. Chatbots used now can adjust the language and incorporate appropriate nuanced structure to cater to students’ moods.

Opportunity for better information absorption

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) bring unprecedented opportunities for more engaging learning experiences. Training for special abilities is now more intense and realistic, which allows for further advancements in knowledge, skills, and methods in the sciences, medicine and other skill-intensive fields.

Efficiency for teachers

Artificial intelligence increases the automation of repetitive tasks of teachers like clarification of requirements, grading of papers and tracking the progress of students. It can also be effectively used for the personalisation of a student’s learning experience as it adjusts learning pathways depending on the learner’s needs. Experts even see chatbots getting developed for deeper discussions with students while at the same time providing administrative assistance to teachers.

 Cost-effective solution

It is common for universities to face stricter budget considerations. Cloud computing is the cost-effective solution for the infrastructure support needed for the use of new educational technologies.

 Increased Student Intake

The use of cloud technology allows students to have easier access to modules, instructional materials and references. It likewise gives greater options for students when choosing the university to attend for their college education. On the other hand, universities gain broader opportunities to attract students from geographical areas that may be too far from physical classes.

 Better Student Retention

The versatility of the blended learning model allows students the flexibility to continue their studies despite challenges like the forced mobility restrictions imposed by governments in the past two years. In a country that gets an average of 20 typhoons in a year, cloud technology is a way of bringing the school to the safety of students’ homes even in less than ideal weather situations.

 New Services

Cloud technology opens the door to endless possibilities for the educational sector as delivery becomes seamless. Many colleges and universities worldwide offer virtual classrooms, video conferencing and a variety of new technology-based learning. Classes are no longer limited to modules but are highly interactive and immersive.

 Storage

Like other sectors, cloud services for the educational sector are highly scalable. Depending on the organisation’s need and use, the cloud is vertically scalable and can handle all the data that universities traditionally kept onsite.

This unique session will present the latest research and case studies on the current use and possibilities for cloud computing in the educational sector of the Philippines such as:
  • Exploring how cloud technology provides the perfect infrastructure for highly interactive and immersive learning experiences that result in deeper absorption and retention of lessons
  • Understanding how cloud computing can give more efficient and effective services for educational institutions even as it revolutionises students’ learning experience
  • Exploring how a cloud strategy will speed up processes, deployment, and flexibility in delivering high-volume exchange of information without limitation to a geographical area
  • Reducing costs and maximising precious resources of the education sector even with the enlarged capacity for vertical scaling
  • Ensuring compliance with data privacy laws by understanding security components on the cloud
  • Establishing collaboration with teams of cloud and security experts to ensure a successful cloud strategy
  • Discovering how cloud technology enables integration and facilitates collaboration among educational institutions
