Gathering Insights to Advance Thailand’s Digital Economy

Thailand is striving to gather accurate and dependable data that will help enhance its digital economy.  The Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa) is looking to develop a comprehensive survey that will provide insights into Thailand’s Software, Hardware, Smart Devices, Digital Services and Big Data industries for the next three years.

To gain advice and supporting information from different sources, depa recently held a brainstorming meeting with representatives from various agencies and associations. Dr Kasitithorn Phuparadai, the Deputy Director of depa, chaired the forum to discuss gathering opinions and demand for using survey data to improve and develop survey processes and methods.

Representatives from various agencies and associations such as the Digital Council for Economy and Society of Thailand, the Thai IoT Association, The Federation of Thai Industries, the Thai Startup Association, the ATSI Association, the e-commerce Association, and the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand were present at the meeting to provide their input and support.

Fostering growth in local digital businesses and advancing the digital economy are also essential for the nation. Ployrawee Krirkphankul, Director of the Digital Economy Division in the Office of the National Digital Economy and Society Commission (NACC), and her team recently met with Pornchai Homchuen, Assistant Director General of depa and Sarit Witoon, Advisor to depa, to discuss strategies for accomplishing this objective.

Pornchai emphasised depa’s role and mission in advancing the digital transformation of the economy and society at the conference. The agency’s four pillars of digital economy promotion are:

  • Digital age human resource development.
  • Digital economy upgrade.
  • Digital economy community acceleration.
  • Digital innovation infrastructure development.

Transforming Ubon Ratchathani Province into a smart city would help achieve the province’s development objectives. Using technology and digital innovation to push economic and social progress towards a real digital economy is fundamental to success.

The Ubon Ratchathani Province continues its efforts to become a “smart city,” which involves improving the region’s physical and digital infrastructure and providing an atmosphere encouraging technological and digital innovation.

Sarit elaborated on the initiatives in Ubon Ratchathani Province that are helping to propel smart city development, such as raising awareness of the need for smart city development at the district level and analysing methods of managing food processing facilities.

Several initiatives have been taken to promote Thailand’s national digital economy. During the fiscal year 2023, four proposals for enhancing Thailand’s digital economy and society have been considered for funding. The fourth area is encouraging digital technologies in public administration, agriculture, cultivating talent, and disseminating new ideas. There have been almost 500 funding proposals in these areas of policy.

Working capital management was a topic that was reviewed and ultimately approved by the DE Fund Management Committee. The idea of using Industry 4.0 principles to build a vast online database of industrial readiness levels was studied, as was its implementation. This venture was funded in the 2020 fiscal year budget.

Indicators of digital transformation are also measured in Thailand with the help of the Digital Outlook research project. The commission’s recommendations will serve as a policy and road map for the digital economy and society. In addition, the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) evaluates the nation’s overall innovation and digital economy policy development.

They will evaluate Thailand’s issues and barriers to implementing policy and advancing digital Thailand. The panel will suggest workable policies and a framework for directing and promoting the digital economy and society. The draft’s suggestions will aid in improving the effectiveness of data storage and expanding the range of digital economic indicators. The Thai government is thus able to develop an extensive digital economic indicator.
