Improving 5G and Digitalisation to Boost Thai Tourism Industry

Puchphong Nodthaisong, Secretary-General of the National Digital Economy and Society Commission, assessed the “5G Use Case” trial project at Phuket Data Sandbox Platform. The platform is the core system for integrating data with other methods to gather data for an accurate decision.

Puchphong undertook the Phuket Sandbox inspection screening method in preparation for the opening of the tourism business in Phuket. The pilot project aims to use 5G technology to boost decision-making confidence in the tourism industry by providing real-time data.

The high-speed new-generation internet will aid in surveillance and environmental measurement, boosting company confidence domestically and internationally. Puchphong also visited and followed up on the findings of the National Emergency Call Center 191 Phuket, located within Phuket Sandbox Propulsion.

To expand the use of digital in the tourism industry over the next ten years, Foresight Centre’s Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) invited travel partners and relevant agencies to reflect on and identify important factors and signs that should be monitored as joint projects for the future. In a’ Travel in Thailand, the New Dimension of the Digital World’ event, they discuss all dimensions of the travel sector, from society, technology, economy, environment, and policy.

“Because the future is dependent on the present, Foresight is another technique for forecasting the future. So what will the issues be in the next ten years? What is the best and worst case scenario that you need to be aware of?” asked Dr Chaichana Mitphan, Director of ETDA, at the event.

The ETDA Foresight Center will collect data from this activity to analyse, synthesise, and formulate policy recommendations that would construct infrastructure, policy, strategy, and various promotions to increase tourism in the digital age and accelerate Thai GDP.

Dr Trin Tawitaranon, Assistant Director of ETDA and Head of the Foresight Center by ETDA team, noted that the tourist group already knows that digital is the next wave that will help the industry to expand and thrive. Digitalisation is critical in moving the country’s GDP position in the tourism sector.

The “Digital Tourism” Foresight Workshop activity will be combined and collated into the “Strategic Foresight Report,” which will be utilised as information and suggestions to drive policies, strategies, and direction in all sectors in the future.

Additionally, Thailand was also improving rural digital technology. Rapeepat Namnapol, Central Region Branch Manager of the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa) met with Somnuk Phromkhiao, Governor of Samut Songkhram Province. The depa representative offered strategies to drive and develop the digital economy in Samut Songkhram Province, as well as to discuss ways to integrate work according to the mission and the role of the depa that will participate in the operation of agencies in the area in the future.

Depa also attended a meeting to prepare the (draught) strategy to enhance the digital economy in Samut Songkhram Province at the same time. Depa also discusses future collaboration in the field to drive the development of smart city readiness. The province will continue to form a working group to push the digital economy forward to achieve concrete smart city development.

Sirisak thought Samut Songkhram Province has potential and individuals qualified to build (draught) a plan to promote the province’s digital economy. Therefore, the provincial administration will meet to discuss the draught improvement as the next step. The document will then be presented to the Integrated Provincial Administration Committee (Bor.Bor.Jor.) for consideration and approval for inclusion in the provincial development plan.
