Indian government owned agency develops international standards compliant common service platform for M2M communication

The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), an Indian Government owned telecommunications technology development centre, has developed a common service platform for Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, which is compliant with oneM2M standards.

OneM2M is a global partnership among Standards Defining Organizations (SDOs) and Industry Associations from Europe, US, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, India and others (click here for current list of members) for M2M and IoT standards.

The C-DOT Common Service Platform(CCSP) can be deployed on off-the-shelf generic server platforms or cloud infrastructure. The business application providers can deploy their oneM2M compliant applications in either co-located infrastructure or on any public or private cloud.

As the Indian government pushes forward with its Smart Cities Mission, Internet-of-Things (IoT) will play a crucial role in developing smart infrastructure, such as electricity and water supply and public transport. Standardisation is required in order to deliver cost-effective IoT/M2M solutions. The adoption of suitable standards will ensure interoperability and that solution developers devote their energies to the actual building of product and on innovations, rather than reinventing the wheel.

The press release states that smart cities can reap all the benefits of using a standards compliant horizontal service layer using the CCSP platform from C-DOT, and be more efficient, economical and future proof.

C-DOT has also developed various indigenously designed hardware nodes like AND (Application Dedicated Node), ASN (Application Service Node) and MN(Middle node), compliant with oneM2M.

In addition, C-DOT has developed various applications like Smart Living, Smart Street Light, Carbon Footprint Monitoring Application and Power Monitoring which are fully oneM2M compliant, demonstrating the strength of the platform.

Union Minister for Communications Manoj Sinha said that standardisation of M2M communication will ensure that there is participation of many players in realisation of smart city ICT infrastructure and it will be a platform on which new applications like e-health, e-traffic control, e-waste management, e-mandi (e-market), e-education and many other new applications will evolve.

C-DOT has participated in two international interoperability events where the CCSP and the ADN were tested for interoperability with other oneM2M compliant nodes from various organisations like Interdigital, HERIT, Huawei, HPE, NTT, KETI (Korea Electronics Technology Institute) etc. C-DOT also participated in the conformance testing with European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).

An India – European Union project called ‘India-EU Cooperation on ICT-Related Standardisation, Policy and Legislation’ (the co-operation intends to support intensified cooperation between the EU and India on ICT-related standardisation, policy and legislation issues as well as on exchange of statistical data and metadata) is organising a workshop on “Future proof smart cities with a common service layer: a standards driven approach” at C-DOT campus in New Delhi on 21st April 2017.  City Councillors from Europe and Korea who have implemented smart city projects  global smart cities will share their standards driven approach.
