Indonesia to Digitalise One Million MSMEs, Thousands of People’s Markets

According to Indonesia’s Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan, the government has set a goal to encourage the digitalisation of 1,000 people’s marketplaces and one million micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) throughout the nation. The statement was made in the New Market of Cicalengka in Bandung regency, West Java province, during the Dissemination of the Implementation of Digitalisation Utilisation in Payment and Retribution Systems.

The Minister stated, that through digitisation, the people’s market will have a marketplace, facilitating transactions between buyers and sellers and shortening the distribution chain. He added that, with more than 64 million MSMEs, Indonesia can accelerate digital transformation in the commercial sector and contribute positively to the country’s digital economic growth.

He continued by saying that the traditional, conventional market would not disappear because of market digitisation. It means that in addition to developing a physical ecology, a digital ecosystem also needs to be formed.

To implement this programme, according to Minister Zulkifli, the government worked with a number of stakeholders, including Bank Indonesia through the SIAP-QRIS payment system, and public and private institutions.

Additionally, the Ministry of Trade will assist traders by establishing an Information System on Trading Platform (SISP) that will allow them to access price information, record the average daily turnover, and Monitoring System on Staple Food Market (SP2KP). The programme can act as a model for other people’s marketplaces to go digital, and it is anticipated to be implemented in other areas outside of Java Island.

Meanwhile, the Cyber Incident Response Team/CSIRT was established in partnership with the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) by the state-owned electric company PT PLN (Persero).

Through its subsidiary, PT. Generation Java-Bali (PJB), PLN is now the first energy enterprise in Indonesia to develop a cybersecurity response system because of the partnership. This synergy is anticipated to improve the security of the digital infrastructure of this PLN-owned company that generates power.

Prior to the recent signing of a memorandum of agreement in Jakarta, the cooperation between PLN and BSSN has been carried out since 2019 through several projects. One of the actions taken in response to the realisation of the understanding is the launching of the CSIRT, or Cyber Security Incident Response Team, at PJB.

Through this partnership, PJB receives an official Registration Certificate (STR) from BSSN and is granted priority access to information about cyber-attack events and trends worldwide via IDSIRTII/CC (Indonesia Security Incident Response Team on Internet Infrastructure/Coordination Center).

Additionally, due to the excessive traffic flowing to PJB, the National Security Operation Center (NSOC) will give PJB extra attention.

Furthermore, Jasa Tirta II, a BUMN tasked with controlling the public use of water and quality water resources, continues to intensify Smart Water Management by installing Automatic Water Level Recorders (AWLR) in 15 working areas points.

This AWLR tool is telemetry equipment that measures water levels automatically and constantly and graphs the findings (hydrograph).

This equipment monitors natural resources online, both in quantity and quality, in anticipation of flood occurrences, raw water fulfilment, and water quality monitoring for FEWS, Water Security, and Food Security.

FEWS is an online early warning system used in Jasa Tirta II’s upstream, downstream, eastern, and western operational areas. These integrated systems help Jasa Tirta II monitor natural resources, particularly during floods, and formulate anticipatory steps that must be carried out better and faster.
