Indonesian 5G Portal to Show Development Updates

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics cooperated with Indonesian telecom companies to establish a 5G information centre portal page. Through the 5Gnow.id digital platform, various details relating to 5G advancements in Indonesia can be made available by the public from within and outside the country. The platform will be able to have interactive contact with various stakeholders, including people and businesses as users of 5G network-based services and solutions.

Denny Setiawan, Director of Resources Management at the Ministry of Communication and Information’s Directorate General of Resources and Equipment of Post and Information Technology noted that the platform is a vehicle for various new projects and breakthroughs to boost Indonesia’s digital transformation momentum.

“The collaboration of the entire 5G ecosystem in Indonesia, including regulators, mobile operators, equipment providers, and so on, will undoubtedly encourage the implementation of 5G as a national priority agenda and a dedication from the Government of Indonesia,” he said during the launch event at the international mobile congress forum in Barcelona, Spain.

As Director of 5Gnow, Denny appreciated stakeholders’ support for the portal, which provides information on 5G developments in Indonesia. The webpage will be a hub for sharing the most recent information on ongoing 5G advancements in Indonesia.

“Ultimately, we expect that this portal will be able to foster the creation of new 5G applications while also being consistent with Government goals to improve the Domestic Component Level (TKDN),” he remarked.

Teguh Prasetya, Chairman of the Indonesian Internet of Things Association (ASIOTI), indicated that the 5G market in Indonesia is still growing and developing, specifically in advancing IoT, AI, Big Data, and the Metaverse.

According to Bandung Institute of Technology research, creating a 5G network in Indonesia can contribute more than IDR 2,8 trillion (US$180 million), or 9.5% of the total GDP in 2030. It can reach IDR 3,500 trillion, or 9.8% of the real Indonesian GDP, by 2035.

Julian Gorman, Head of the Asia Pacific Worldwide Industry Organisation, praises the establishment of 5Gnow.id, which might encourage new ideas about the role of 5G in developing Indonesian society. Julian aspires to boost the adoption of new technologies in Asia by exhibiting the finest that the 5G ecosystem has to offer in Indonesia.

Reliable infrastructure and connections help Indonesia to grow its digitisation efforts, including the smart city programme. Recently, the government added another city to its commitment to the Lumajang smart city initiative.

The Government of Lumajang Regency has agreed on a virtual Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Communication and Information of the Republic of Indonesia related to implementing the Smart City Project for Lumajang Regency in 2023. Lumajang Regent Thoriqul Haq (Cak Thoriq) expects all stakeholders within the Lumajang Regency Government to collaborate to execute Smart City as effectively as possible.

According to Dwi Elfrida, the Coordinator for the Preparation of the Smart City Master Plan Directorate of LAIP Kominfo RI, her organisation evaluated eight provinces and 88 regencies/cities that proposed the Smart City programme in their territories in 2022. They chose the two best provinces judged ready to operate the smart province programme from the eight provinces, and 50 selected 88 districts/cities that will participate in the programme toward Smart districts/cities in 2023.

Lumajang Regency was chosen among hundreds of districts/cities across Indonesia to be one of 50 districts/cities to receive the Smart City programme, which had previously undergone an assessment procedure based on six Smart City factors. Smart Environment, Smart Branding, Smart Government, Smart Healthy, Smart Economy, and Smart Society are the specifics.
