Looking for Tech-Savvy Educators in the Philippines

As social media and other digital platforms continue to change, more and more opportunities and tools have become available, especially when it comes to promoting the products, services, and causes of the organisations. Thus, the Science and Technology Information Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-STII) is working with an association of private schools to come up with activities and programmes that will get Filipino students and teachers interested in science by using social media and other digital platforms.

“It has been shared to us that several schools have been maintaining their own social media pages, wherein they are posting all the activities and other relevant posts and journals that would spur the interests of young students on science and technology,” says Richard P. Burgos, Director, DOST-STII.

He also said that DOST-STII wants to help science and math teachers learn how to explain and promote scientific ideas and knowledge in ways that are easy to understand and fun, so that students can get more out of them.

The science and math teachers took a course called “Communicating Science through Social Media Posting and Digital Broadcasting” where they learned how to create engaging S&T-related content fit for Facebook and other social media platforms. Teachers gained knowledge about how to use different social media platforms to spread awareness of various science-related activities and causes. The DOST’s “Science STII’s Journo Ako Advocacy Programme” aims to improve science communication in the nation and foster a scientific culture among Filipino students and educators.

Meanwhile, the DOST SETUP 4.0, which is scheduled to last through 2030, will play a leading role in advancing the technology requirements of MSMEs. To provide the required S&T interventions, the initiative proposes to classify MSMEs according to their stage of development. It will also offer aid at the professional level.

In support of “AmBisyon Natin 2040,” the initiative promotes the creation of an “Innovative, Resilient, Sustainable and Globally Competitive Gender-Responsive MSME Sector” that will foster a sustainable society and economy for Filipinos.

Through the following SMARTER Strategic Themes: Sustainable Economy, Market Competence, Able Human Capital, Responsive S&T Support Infrastructure, Technology and Innovation, Enterprise Support, and Resiliency and Continuity, it seeks to transform MSMEs into smart MSMEs.

The remaining three strategic themes are enterprise-level, whereas the first four are industry-level. The sustainable economy strategic theme is concerned with promoting sustainable business practices among MSMEs, including helping them collaborate with clients and suppliers who share their concerns about issues like environmental sustainability, sustainable development, and even social entrepreneurship.

Developing and promoting digital marketing and e-commerce are examples of market competency. A capable human capital, where support will be given in increasing capacities and strengthening knowledge management, is another important component in building an innovative environment.

Responsive S&T support infrastructure is the final industry-level strategic theme, and it consists of tactics for better aligning with industry development plans, establishing connections with research institutions and other innovation stakeholders, and creating frameworks for the most effective delivery of industry assistance.

The enterprise-level strategic theme on technology and innovation also emphasises finance support for MSMEs as well as the transfer and commercialisation of new technologies and inventions. The provision of technical assistance and consulting services to MSMEs as well as enhancing their utilisation of digital infrastructure are all examples of enterprise support.

Finally, support for resilience and continuity will be offered under the strategic topic of resilience and continuity. It is important to highlight that each of the SMARTER strategic themes already has projects, action plans, and particular performance metrics specified.
