New Solutions from HK’s Government Innovation Lab

Two tech companies operating under the Hong Kong Smart Government Innovation Lab have launched new solutions that are now ready to be acquired by companies and institutions.

Solution I – Virtual Reality (VR) for the Construction Safety Training

Solution description

Nowadays, safety training in the construction industry mainly relies on the traditional methods of teaching such as didactic teaching which is a one-way communication leading to the lack of interactivity for trainees to receive opportunities to practice.

Yet, the training system that applies virtual reality technology could give users an immersive experience and a deeper understanding of safety construction procedures and potential hazards. Through accident imitation, users can experience accidents vividly, thereby enhancing site safety awareness and reducing the occurrence of industrial accidents.

On the other hand, for training records and performance analysis, the backend system we have designed replaces the reliance on paperwork and manpower efforts. Real-time quantitative training records and data analysis are provided to safety officers.

The solution was designed to be applied across the areas of Environment, Housing as well as Infrastructure.

The solution employs the latest in Virtual Reality technology.

Use case

First, by utilising the VR Construction Safety Training, worker productivity can be improved. Users can have a better understanding of the construction safety procedures and potential dangers in an immersive VR environment. Also, the VR training system has the capacity for multi-user training enabling the diversification of engagement. With the vivid VR scenes, it helps to develop long-term memories among workers.

Secondly, safety awareness among workers can be enhanced using the VR training modules. The training system provides diverse training modes allowing trainees to experience different levels of difficulty. The provided VR training modules include all-around safety checking such as preparing PPE, and checking if the detailed components of the tools or machines are unsafe. Moreover, an “Accident Imitate Mode” has been developed to allow trainees to experience different potential accidents in-person inside the virtual world to further enhance safety awareness among workers in the construction industry.

Finally, the VR training system provides support in data management. Instead of relying on printed notes and manpower when analysing trainees’ performance, all training and exams will be done digitally through the solution’s VR program, storing the performance evaluation in a database under the backend system automatically. It helps to review the training record of the users and further analyse the users’ performance.

Solution IINetworked Locking System

Solution description

The company’s patented networked locking systems offer a powerful option for mid- to large-size locker installations requiring a comprehensive locker management solution and integration with third-party solutions. The keyless lock is equipped with anti-theft protection and you have the opportunity to see how the lockers are used in real-time.

Features of the solution include a networked alarm, occupancy monitoring and remote locker control. Apart from these core features, the software provides detailed information on locker usage. An intuitive user interface and detailed reports allow operators to easily determine how lockers are used. Thanks to multiple lock modes, lockers can be made freely available to all users with a valid credential, can be designated as a personal locker, and can be reserved.
