NZ to Develop an Industry Transformation Plan for the Digital Tech Sector

Six workshops are coming up as part of the partnership of New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment with NZTech to develop an Industry Transformation Plan for the digital technologies sector.

According to a recent press release, the creation of Industry Transformation Plans was a key action that came out of the Government’s Industry Strategy launched on 2 July.

In addition, it will contribute to the Government’s vision for a more productive, sustainable and inclusive economy.

  • The schedule of workshops is as follows:
  1. Auckland on 26 November 2019
  2. Wellington on 28 November 2019

Industry Transformation Plans

The Government has launched a new approach to industry policy, aimed at growing more innovative industries in New Zealand and lifting the productivity of key sectors.

New Zealand has a strong economic foundation but its productivity has continued to fall behind its main competitors.

To take advantage of the opportunities of the technological revolution the Government has announced Industry Transformation Plans will be developed for key sectors.

Industry Transformation Plans will be sector-led and government supported.

They will involve partnership between government, business, workers and Māori.  Each will be unique to its industry but will build on any existing work to:

  1. Describe an agreed vision for the future state of the sector
  2. Outline the actions required to realise this vision, including investment, innovation and skills development

The Government is committed to working with its partners to grow more innovative industries.

Boosting productivity, including redirecting investment towards more productive sectors, is crucial if New Zealand is to lift the standard of living of all Kiwis, and this will be a key initiative for achieving this.

The initial priority sectors for developing Industry Transformation Plans are the following:

  1. Agritech
  2. Digital technologies
  3. Food and beverage
  4. Forestry and wood processing.

Over time, this could be expanded into other areas that include:

  1. Creative industries
  2. Tourism
  3. Aerospace
  4. Health technologies
  5. Renewable energy
