Soc Trang, Vietnam Launches 5G Network, Intelligent Operations Centre

A 5G network and an intelligent operations centre (IOC) were unveiled in the Soc Trang province in the Mekong Delta. The Standing Vice Chairwoman of the provincial Party Committee said that despite many difficulties, including the pandemic, Soc Trang has taken steps to build an e-administration. It expects that by 2030, the province will have fundamentally and comprehensively reformed management and governance activities so that the local administration can operate more efficiently, effectively, and transparently.

It aims to develop the local economy based on science, technology, and high-quality human resources. The Vice Chairwoman stated that new values can be created to raise labour productivity and generate new growth momentum.

As per a report, the state-run group Viettel completed the building of the 5G network in two months, making Soc Trang the 17th province in Vietnam, and one of the first localities in the southern region, to access 5G services. An official explained that the launch of 5G services is the first move to universalise the network here and also an important step for Viettel to accelerate the building of digital infrastructure in the province. The city also inaugurated its IOC, which was developed with support from Viettel.

The Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee informed that the IOC is one of the key facilities in the socio-economic development of Soc Trang city. It will help governance and task performance be more transparent and effective, and swifter, thus contributing to local smart city building and digital transformation.

Cities and provinces around the country are investing in digital solutions to improve the quality of public services and the efficiency of their delivery. In March, Ho Chi Minh City announced it would create a digital administration this year. The city’s leaders have pointed out the major areas of focus: governing the city in the new normal (post-pandemic), building databases and linking all databases related to governance, and finding new driving forces for future growth.

As OpenGov Asia reported, the city will implement comprehensive technology solutions and exploit shared databases containing information about the public, enterprises, and land.

Recently, the Binh Dinh province approved detailed planning of artificial intelligence (AI) research and development centre to be constructed in the provincial capital of Quy Nhon. The centre will provide facilities to develop and produce software and cybersecurity and AI solutions as well as support digital transformation overall. It is also expected to help attract investment in fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technologies, enabling the country to then explore and eventually master 5IR technologies.

Last week, Ha Long city in the northern Quang Ninh province deployed the Ha Long Smart application to serve people and businesses in a bid to digitally transform the area. Through the app, residents can report problems to authorities, access online public services, and seek routes to departmental headquarters, tourist attractions, hotels, schools, healthcare facilities, and pharmacies. To keep citizens up to date, the app will also provide information from local administrations and media outlets.
