Thailand’s Ambitious Leap Towards Carbon Neutrality

National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and Banpu Public Company Limited along with its five national research centres – NECTEC, MTEC, BIOTEC, NANOTEC and ENTEC – are working to accelerate the nation’s carbon neutrality journey. Professor Dr Sukit Limpijumnong, the President of NSTDA, stated that they are committed to serving as the national STI powerhouse to develop the country’s capacity in research, development and innovation.

They are forging partnerships across various sectors, including government, industry, and community, to foster the creation of groundbreaking solutions and facilitate their practical implementation for the advancement of social and economic development.

Thailand has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving the ambitious long-term objectives of carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2065. These targets demonstrate the country’s proactive stance in addressing climate change and transitioning towards a sustainable and low-carbon future.

By setting a goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, Thailand aims to balance its overall carbon emissions with carbon removal or offsetting measures. This entails reducing greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors, including energy, transportation, industry, and agriculture, while simultaneously investing in renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, and other sustainable practices. The ultimate aim is to attain a state where carbon sinks, such as forests or technological solutions, offset the country’s emissions.

The commitment to reaching net-zero GHG emissions by 2065 emphasises Thailand’s recognition of the need for sustained efforts beyond 2050. This extended timeframe allows for a comprehensive and gradual transition, taking into account the complexities and challenges associated with achieving complete decarbonisation. It acknowledges the necessity of implementing long-term strategies, policies, and measures to reduce emissions and promote sustainable practices across all sectors of the economy

Thailand’s commitment to these ambitious targets aligns with global efforts to mitigate climate change and limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. By embracing the transition to a low-carbon economy, Thailand aims to reduce its environmental footprint, preserve natural resources, enhance resilience to climate impacts, and create opportunities for sustainable economic growth and development.

As Thailand moves forward on its path towards carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions, collaboration among various stakeholders, including the government, private sector, civil society, and international partners, will be crucial. Together, they can drive innovation, support the adoption of clean technologies, and foster the necessary policy and regulatory frameworks to facilitate the transition.

By embarking on the path to carbon neutrality, Thailand seeks to strike a delicate balance between economic growth and environmental responsibility. The progression and adoption of clean and sustainable technologies will play a pivotal role in this transformative journey. Investments in renewable energy sources, energy-efficient infrastructure, and sustainable practices across sectors such as energy, transportation, industry, and agriculture will not only contribute to economic growth but also reduce carbon emissions and environmental degradation.

Thailand’s commitment to environmental and national sustainability extends beyond the reduction of carbon emissions. The country recognises the importance of preserving and enhancing its natural resources, promoting biodiversity conservation, and safeguarding ecosystems. Through sustainable land management practices, reforestation efforts, and the protection of critical habitats, Thailand strives to create a harmonious balance between development and environmental stewardship.

Furthermore, Thailand acknowledges the significance of collaboration and international cooperation in tackling the global climate crisis. The country actively seeks partnerships with other nations, international organisations, and stakeholders to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and drive collective action towards a low-carbon and climate-resilient future. Through these collaborations, Thailand aims to leverage global expertise and resources to accelerate its transition towards a sustainable and climate-friendly economy.
