A ceremony was held for the Nhat Tan-Noi Bai smart city project in Hanoi, earlier this week.
The project is backed by the Hanoi’s People’s Committee, BRG Group, and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation Group. It is the first smart city project in Hanoi.
The project is based on smart urban planning for the Nhat Tan-Noi Bai route, which is over 11km long.
The smart city project along this route will connect the city centre with the mega smart city project developed by the BRG-Sumitomo joint venture.
The project is divided into five phases that are expected to be fully completed by 2028. It is worth nearly US $4.2 billion and covers 272 hectares.
The main feature of this project will be a 108-storey financial tower. Investors aim to turn the city into the financial centre of Vietnam, and eventually Southeast Asia.
A multifunctional smart monitoring and warning system will be installed to keep track of the quality of air, water, weather, and natural disaster risks as well as security and safety.
A management system of smart buildings and renewable energy technology will be prioritised to optimise energy supply and storage.
The implementation of an environmentally-friendly public transport system will help connect the smart city with the centre of Hanoi.
The ceremony was a reiteration of Vietnam’s commitment to implement a sustainable smart city development project between 2018 and 2025, with a vision to complete it by 2030. The aim was to establish a chain of smart cities in the northern, central and southern regions, and the Mekong Delta.
In June 2017, Ha Noi’s People’s Committee, BRG Group, and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation Group signed a co-operation agreement to develop the smart city project during the Vietnamese Prime Minister’s official visit to Japan.
In May 2018, a Vietnamese-Japanese consortium consisting of four Vietnamese enterprises led by BRG and Sumitomo submitted a proposal to build a smart city to the Hanoi People’s Committee. The consortium proposed establishing five companies to execute five component projects.
Last year, media reports said that in the first of the five phases, the Sumitomo-BRG joint venture would invest more than US $1 billion to develop infrastructure and linkage for the project. The smart city’s core would be metro line No 2, starting from Tran Hung Dao Street.
According to BRG’s Chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Nga, once completed, the smart city will become a landmark development in Hanoi’s gateway, driving urbanisation in the northern Red River area, creating numerous jobs, and propelling the city’s socio-economic development.
Hanoi is not the only Vietnamese city to benefit from smart city technologies. Earlier this week, OpenGov reported that Ho Chi Minh city authorities have rolled out projects to foster the application of artificial intelligence in production and smart city building. AI will create the foundation to successfully realise the smart city development project.
Also, all of Ho Chi Minh’s 24 districts have Internet of Things (IoT) broadcasting stations installed. Around 1,000 Narrow Band-IoT (NB-IoT) broadcasting stations have been activated, covering the whole city.
