Spurring Digital Leadership to Shape Indonesia’s Future

Since 2021, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) has launched various initiatives to enhance public knowledge about digitalisation. This year, Kominfo introduced the Digital Leadership Academy (DLA) to improve the digital skills of Indonesian leaders in both the public and private sectors through collaborations with prestigious universities worldwide.

Vice Minister of Communication and Informatics Nezar Patria emphasised that digital leadership is crucial in implementing digital transformation, particularly in applying digital governance. In his speech at the National Leadership Training Level II Batch XVII of 2024 at the Training and Development Centre and Legal Studies (Puslatbang KHAN) of the State Administration Agency (LAN) online from the Ministry of Communication and Informatics office, Central Jakarta, Friday (07/05/2024), Nezar Patria stated that digital leadership is critical and a shared concern.

“Digital leadership is very important and a shared concern. Kominfo is fully committed to enhancing the capacity of leaders in both the public and private sectors as part of this digital transformation,” he said.

The implementation of digital governance aims to produce public services that are more efficient, inclusive, transparent, and accountable. Digital leadership is needed in data-based decision-making, not just leveraging technology in public service delivery.

“Every decision-making process must be based on data. Data is the foundation of all decisions within the framework of digital governance,” Nezar Patria emphasised.

Indonesia has actively encouraged its citizens to be more digitally literate. With the vision of Indonesia Emas 2024, the country has acknowledged the importance of accelerating digital transformation as a crucial part of its journey towards success.

As reported by OpenGov, Indonesia has collaborated with multiple stakeholders to prepare a competent and highly skilled Indonesian talent pool in the digital arena. The Ministry has partnered with the Institute of State Electricity Company Technology (ITPLN) as a concrete step to expedite national digital transformation.

This collaboration with educational institutions will play a vital role in expediting the digital transformation process and, as a result, will significantly contribute to the nation’s overall economic growth and development. This synergy between education and technology is a national driving force for economic prosperity and technological advancement.

Moreover, the Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie Setiadi, has launched a critical initiative to support digital transformation in Indonesia. Through the Digital Leadership Academy (DLA) programme, over a thousand digital leaders have received training to propel digital transformation by enhancing workforce capacity and human resources.

Fundamentally, digital transformation requires leadership that comprehends and masters digital aspects in every sector. Since 2021, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has initiated the DLA programme to strengthen digital leadership in Indonesia. Budi Arie emphasised that this digital training programme is aimed at public and private leaders.

Through the DLA, executives, policymakers, and business actors are expected to formulate innovative policies, initiate digital transformation, and enhance the country’s digital economic competitiveness. With the implementation of digital governance, the Vice Minister believes there is a need for adaptability and flexibility in responding to dynamic changes and providing responsive public services. Knowledge of big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence (AI) becomes essential in this era of digitalisation.

The Digital Leadership Academy (DLA) collaborates with renowned universities worldwide. This programme aims to produce leaders with digital skills who can formulate policies, initiate digital innovations, and boost the competitiveness of Indonesia’s digital economy. The DLA programme includes training in various fields, such as business digitalisation, cybersecurity, and governance. As of 2024, 1,236 participants have taken part in this programme.

The success of this programme is evident from the various digital initiatives launched by DLA alums. They have played a crucial role in developing targeted policies and creating innovations that drive technological progress in various sectors.

Thus, the Digital Leadership Academy becomes a solid foundation for building Indonesia’s digital future, ensuring that digital transformation is conducted inclusively, transparently, and accountably, bringing tangible benefits to all Indonesian citizens.
