MIMOS, the national R&D agency for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Malaysia published a summary of the projects and initiatives it has been involved in during the first six months of 2017.

MoU with Kenanga Investment Bank for FinTech collaboration

On March 9, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between MIMOS and Kenanga Investment Bank for collaboration on the development of FinTech applications. The two parties would design, develop and commercialise homegrown technologies in the areas of information security and intelligent informatics for the capital markets.

This was MIMOS’ second FinTech-related deal in four months. In December 2016, MIMOS signed an MoU with Securities Commission Malaysia to jointly develop an advanced analytics platform for capital market.

On March 27, MIMOS signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) to work together in research, development, innovation and training.

The MoU focuses on bridging the knowledge and skill gap between industry and the academia. It will strengthen talent supply in the areas of semiconductor, microelectronics, nanoelectronics, advanced manufacturing and related technologies. It is also expected to drive the creation of more technopreneurs in the Electrical and Electronics (E&E) sector.

At the same event, UTeM also signed MoAs with five other industry players.

Digital assessment of human resources for Industry 4.0

On April 11, MIMOS organised a one-day event dedicated to digital assessment technology for evaluation of human resources. The event comprised a psychometrics symposium, adoption of two international standards as Malaysian Standards (MS ISO), and inauguration of the Malaysian Psychometrics Association. These standards would provide guidelines for government and private agencies that intend to use assessment methods for various purposes, such as recruitment, promotion and staff placement in the future.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau highlighted the need for automation and digitisation of traditionally manual operations, as the country country forges ahead to build a digital economy. Human resource management was cited as an example, where research-backed psychometric assessment could meet evolving industry needs.

MoU documents were exchanged between MIMOS and a number of collaborators in this field of technology.  Thirteen MIMOS technology strategic partners were also recognised during the event. MIMOS’ psychometrics technology has been adopted by some 20 Malaysian organisations so far, including six ministries.

Launch of Malaysian Health Data Warehouse

The Ministry of Health (MoH) launched the Malaysian Health Data Warehouse (MyHDW) on April 18 , taking a significant step towards managing healthcare data at national level.

MyHDW was created with local technology developed by MIMOS, and modelled after best practices from various developed countries. It has been built through collaboration and partnerships involving not just the Ministry of Health but also, several other government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and also the private sector.

The system features feature-rich dashboards with interactive information for quick analysis. MIMOS Mi-Harmony tool enables MyHDW to deal with unstructured data. MyHDW can also be integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to present analysed health statistics coordinated geographically, down to very specific locations. This would help in future planning of health statistics.

Security and privacy are governed by the Data and Information Governance Committee. Two-factor authentication and data de-identification are employed for added security.

Consortium for Integrated Circuit design

On May 2, MIMOS announced the formation of a consortium for Integrated Circuit (IC) Design, comprising six founding members representing a variety of expertise in IC Design.

The consortium will move to encourage more local IC Design organisations to join and take advantage of economies of scale in new business ventures, particularly in global Electrical and Electronics supply chain.

On May 12, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) launched intelligent community infrastructure (iComm) project was launched at Tuaran town centre. The town, located about 30 km from Sabah’s capital Kota Kinabalu, is the first township in the country to receive the iComm.

The project is developed and managed by MIMOS. The pilot was launched at a Pahang riverbank village in 2016.

Thirteen iComm poles were erected at strategic locations such as the busiest intersections, schools, mosque, district office, market, library and stadium. Seventeen more poles were installed at tourist spots in the small town of Kiulu, in the same district. The poles offers 24-hour surveillance cameras, smart sensors for monitoring air quality, a downloadable community communication app, and free WiFi access.
