Philippine university to offer Master’s Programs in Innovation through Media Arts Technology and Data Science

An announcement
made by the Ateneo de Manila University
(ADMU) highlighted 2 new Master’s programs being offered as a response to the
advancing progression in the digital world.

ADMU will be launching two new programs to
take part in this advancing progression in the digital world as well as push
towards new directions.

The ADMU Department of Information Systems
and Computer Science (DISCS) is launching two new master’s degree programs:
Innovation through Media Arts Technology (IMAT) and Data Science offered in
2018.

Options are available on what format the
two programs can be taken. They are:

(1)
Stand-Alone/Single Degree
Format – in this format, the degree will be conferred by the ADMU only.

(2)
Dual Degree Format – in this
format, the student will obtain a degree from two universities, the ADMU and the Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).

The partnership between the two
universities is timely as this will satisfy critical needs and answer
challenges in a world that is transforming at an accelerated pace.

These dual degree graduate programs were
developed as part of the Joint Development of Niche Programmes (JDNP), a partnership
between the British Council and
the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

The objective of JDNP is to provide
capacity and funding support for Philippine higher education institutions
(HEIs) to establish international connectivity and engagement through
developing transnational education (TNE) partnerships with HEIs in the United
Kingdom (UK).

The British Council is the UK’s
international organisation for cultural relations and educational
opportunities.

CHED is in charge of formulating plans,
policies and strategies relating to higher education in the Philippines.

IMAT is an interdisciplinary program that combines
the creative arts with computer and electronics-based technologies. It aspires
to produce graduates who will be key players in creative industries such as
advertising and industrial design also as valuable makers in the diverse
start-up industry.

IMAT is housed in ADMU’s DISCS.  The program is developed by DISCS together with
ADMU’s Department of Fine Arts and the Department of Electronics, Computer, and
Communications Engineering.

It is also being offered as a dual degree program
from both ADMU and QMUL. It will be a two-year program on a full-time basis.
The student will be able stay in London for four months and obtain degrees from
both universities.

Aside from the standard ADMU and QMUL retention
policies for graduate students, IMAT requires a minimum grade of B+ in each of
the first three fundamental courses (9 units) required in the first term of the
program.

The Data Science program combines
mathematical foundations and computational methods with domain understanding in
various fields to help generate actionable insights from data analysis.

In the information age, there is an actual
overflow of data. The data science program wants to develop students capable of
deriving insight from large datasets using statistical and computational
methods. It is designed to produce graduates who will become key players across
industries and be able to meet the emerging demands for Data Science
professionals.

Data Science is housed in ADMU's DISCS.
Integrative at its core, it will draw from the fields of Mathematics,
Management, and Electronics, Computer and Communications Engineering.

It is also available as a dual degree program
by the ADMU and QMUL beginning in 2019. The course will take 18 – 21 months on a
full-time basis, with up to four months to be spent in London. The student will
obtain degrees from both universities.

Aside from the standard ADMU and QMUL
retention policies for graduate students, Data Science students are required to
maintain a minimum grade of B+ in each of the foundation courses required in
the first two semesters of the program.
