University of South Australia to offer new Masters’ programs in Data Science and Sustainable Energy Systems

University of South Australia to offer new Masters’ programs in Data Science and Sustainable Energy Systems

Starting this September, two new joint
Masters’ programs will commence at the University of South Australia
(UniSA). The Master of Science in Data Science (International) and the Master
of Science in Sustainable Energy Systems are programs that are building on
UniSA’s strong partnership with the University College London.

According to the announcement
made by UniSA, successful applicants of the two international postgraduate
programs can be studying in London this year. Students who enter the program
will have the advantage of obtaining a joint Masters’ degree from both the
University of South Australia and the University College London.

The UniSA Pro Vice Chancellor: IT, Engineering
and the Environment Professor Simon Beecham said that the new offerings will
give masters students a remarkable opportunity to gain international
perspectives in their field of study.

He explained that both of the programs would
provide the students with the opportunity to learn from experts with broad international
experience. Not only that, but the students will also gain industry experience
in two countries.

The most important aspect that the student
of each program will gain is to learn in an industry context, maximising the
strong engagement that both universities have with industry. The students will
be able to learn through relevant placements and projects during their studies
or through a curriculum deeply informed by industry realities and challenges.

Prof Beecham added that the programs offer
a unique opportunity for Australian students to look at those challenges
through a new lens, in the context of the European market and the changes that
Britain’s exit from the EU will mean for business and development both in data
science and sustainable energy.

The UCL Dean of Faculty of Engineering
Sciences Professor Nigel Titchener-Hooker said he is delighted to see the
flourishing of the partnership with UniSA and how it is providing international
opportunities for students.

Prof Titchener-Hooker discussed how the
world is completely transformed by globalisation and it would be an enormous
advantage for any graduate to have studied across cultures and continents.

He added that this teaching collaboration
will offer students not only two excellent engineering programs, but also
access to industry-engaged projects in two different business environments,
working on energy and data science problems in the context of different
environments. This opportunity is the real asset.

For the Master
of Science in Data Science (International)
course, the student will
spend the first eight months of the degree in London, and then they will
transition to Adelaide to complete the remainder of the program. At UCL, the
student may choose from a range of advanced computer science topics including
data mining, machine vision and deep learning. At UniSA, the student will be
able to develop skills in advanced analytics and data visualisation.

The Master
of Science in Sustainable Energy Systems
is an 18-month program
designed to provide the student with a rigorous and comprehensive understanding
of contemporary theory and practice, in the sustainable management of the
global energy industry.
