The Department of Information and Communications
(DICT); along with the University of the Philippines National

(IBPAP), produced its first batch of scholars for the
Business Analytics for Information Technology-Business Process Management
(IT-BPM) training.

According to the report
made by the DICT, the successful scholars graduated from the training last
Thursday, 02 August 2018. The training is part of the digitalPH initiative of
the DICT designed to help improve the qualifications of the local talent pool.

The government, industry and academe have
all worked together in order to equip the IT-BPM workforce with the right
skills and competencies to handle Business Analytics.

DICT Undersecretary Monchito B. Ibrahim,
who also heads the Regional Operations and Countryside and ICT Industry
Development of the DICT, explained that the Business Analytics training is one
of the government’s support programs to the IT-BPM industry.

This gives the existing workforce
opportunities to expand, upskill, and develop their talents as the government
prepares them for the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Moreover, it represents the commitment of
the DICT to the IT-BPM Roadmap through the creation of high-quality
capacity-building programs.

To upskill existing manpower in specialised
competency areas is one of the High Impact Programs of the IT-BPM Roadmap

IBPAP President and CEO Mr Rey E. Untal
spoke on how the IT-BPM industry appreciates the efforts of the government in
sustaining the requirements of the IT-BPM industry for appropriate skills and
talent that can respond to the needs by providing capacity-building

He added that with such training, the
workforce is enabled to acquire the necessary skills.

The 22 scholars, who graduated, underwent a
nine-week training course. They were able to complete 5 modules that cover
topics identified by the Commission
on Higher Education

UP professors as well as industry experts
with experience in data mining, business intelligence, operations research,
statistical engineering, and supply chain management, among others, conducted
the training.

Some of the topics that were included in
the training curriculum are fundamentals, concepts, business and technical
architecture and best practices relating to Business Analytics.

Tools, data management, techniques,
industry applications, and future directions of business analytics and data
mining were also taught to the scholars.

The training also equipped them with the
appropriate data mining and machine learning tools they needed in order to
solve industry problems and be capable of interpreting the results correctly.

Moreover, they were able to learn how to
analyse massive amounts of data, produce dashboards, generate summary reports,
identify hidden information or patterns needed for managerial decision support,
and analyse trends and systems based on the data collected.
