The Philippines’ Department of Science and Technology-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) recently hosted the first installment of its EPIIC Learning Series at their Training Room.

According to a recent press release, the EDPC as Platform for Inclusive Innovation and Collaboration (EPIIC) Learning Series follows a lecture class-type setup wherein experts discuss on topics on electronics and electrical engineering.

The program is under the Department’s Electronics Product Development Centre (EDPC) and was attended by undergraduate students as well as Master’s students, professionals and other Department staff who are in the field of electronics.

The EPIIC Program is able to provide support to companies, schools, and government agencies in terms of designing, prototyping, and testing electronic products.

They also assist in catalysing productivity and global competitiveness of the local electronics industry.

The event opened with a showcase of the Centre’s various products and services.

The Lecture

The Department’s Acting Director, Dr Joel Joseph S. Marciano Jr, welcomed the participants with a short speech highlighting the advancements of electronics, which he related to the research and development (R&D) initiatives of the Department.

The first discussion was focused on the Introduction to RF Circuit Design. The wireless era utilises RF circuits more and more, making it a rather essential point of dialogue.

The afternoon’s main topic revolved around the Essential Principles of Signal Integrity. The second session dealt with an important concept for high-speed digital infrastructures and designs.

The Electronics Product Development Centre (EDPC) is a world-class facility designed to support the electronics industry.

It provides various technical support services to promote innovation and high value product development.

Because of its initial success and foreseen potential, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) partnered with the association of Filipino entrepreneurs engaged in the electronics business, to launch the EPIIC Program.

In other news, the Department recently held the kick-off meeting of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Fixed and Mobile Benchmarking System for Regions 1, 4, and 12.

The NTC NetMesh Project

The NTC NetMesh Project aims to audit and assess the service quality of the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the country.

Benchmarking activities are to be conducted between the advertised speed and the actual internet speed.

Results of which are expected to aid the NTC in formulating regulations to further improve the internet connectivity in the Philippines.

The partnership between the two agencies aims to boost the state of the Philippines’ internet by utilising data and scientific evidence that may lead to effective interventions.

Project Plans

The NTC Regional Directors have expressed hope that the technology would be turned over to them by the end of the year. They are grateful for the DOST-ASTI’s implementation of the initiative.

Technical experts of the Philippine Research, Education, and Government Information Network (PREGINET) and the Embedded System Group (ESG) will be in-charge of overseeing the project.

Both are under the Solutions and Services Engineering Division of the Department.
