Transforming the Western Australian workforce through programming course

The University of Western Australia (UWA) has partnered with an education technology company from the US to launch a new professional web development course.

According to a recent press release, the coding boot camp aims to meet the rising demand for job-ready tech talent by teaching the front-end and back-end skills necessary to become a proficient full stack developer,

Course background

The course will start on 10 September 2019 and will run for 24 weeks. It is a part-time program that is comprised of 2 three-hour evening classes during the week and a four-hour class on Saturdays.

The coding boot camp is an intensive, part-time program designed for working adults who want to transition into technology-based careers.

The partnership made with the education technology company has provided the students with an opportunity to access world-class curriculum, targeted career coaching and instructors who work in the tech industry.

According to a report from a job site, a full-stack developer was the most in-demand job in Australia based on the number of job postings.

Transforming the WA workforce

The launch of this program coincides with the search of WA residents for ways to retrain for new jobs and upskill in their current roles as growth declines in the mining industry.

The University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) explained that the University was keen to find new ways to educate the WA workforce.

This will help more people participate in the booming demand for technology skills locally, nationally and globally.

Tailored to the needs of WA employers, this boot camp is for anyone who is determined to make a transformation in their life.

The CEO and Founder of the company shared that the University was joining a network of universities that recognised the importance of preparing their communities for changes driven by an increasingly tech-focused economy.

The tech skills gap is a global problem and the fastest growing gaps are in cities that are not traditionally thought of as tech hubs.

What’s in store for the students?

Pairing the University’s strengths with the company’s market-driven coding and career curriculum offers students the competence and confidence to succeed in the technology industry.

The course covers the basics of coding, algorithms and data structure plus intensive training in HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Node.js and React.

No previous training or experience is required, but applicants should have an understanding of coding basics.

On top of classroom instruction, students will be spending a minimum of 20 hours a week on outside projects, homework and learning activities

They will also build a professional project portfolio to showcase their abilities and hone their competitive edge in the employment market.

Students will receive career-planning services, portfolio reviews, recruiting assistance and extensive staff support.

Boot camp students will gain skills to develop dynamic end-to-end web applications, as well as receive a Certificate in Full-Stack Web Development from the University.
