Victoria to bolster regional broadband connection

In line with the State Government’s push to improve digital connectivity across regional Victoria, high speed broadband of up to 10 times faster than current speed will be made available for Morwell businesses and residents.

According to a recent press release, AU$ 1.1 million was awarded to a telecommunications company so that it can provide a high-speed, fixed wireless broadband service covering Morwell.

Connecting regional Victoria

This will include the CBD, the Tech School & Innovation Precinct, as well as the Gippsland Logistic Precincts.

Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Trade Martin Pakula explained that having access to fast internet in regional Victoria is a priority.

The Victorian Government is doing all it can to ensure better connectivity throughout the state.

Users can expect download and upload speeds of up to one gigabit per second once the service becomes operational.

Benefits of this service

The company will be offering the service to businesses at prices that are much lower than currently available for business-grade broadband in regional Victoria.

Additionally, the community of Morwell will benefit from the availability of faster speeds with residential plans set to be much better than those currently available.

Being better connected will help Morwell’s businesses to boost the local economy and create jobs.

Delivered as part of the Victorian Government’s Connecting Regional Communities Program, the company will build and maintain the network with construction expected to be complete by 2020.

Moreover, the Victorian Government is connecting regional Victoria through several ways. These include:

  1. Delivering improved mobile coverage
  2. Piloting new broadband networks for businesses in Horsham and Geelong
  3. Installing free public Wi-Fi in Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton and Geelong

Removing red tape

In other news, small businesses will get quicker approvals for council permits thanks to the Victorian Government’s drive to cut red tape and help businesses thrive and provide more jobs.

The Better Approvals Project is helping local councils reduce the time they take to process business permits.

So far 19 councils have taken up the program, producing a 73% reduction in average approval times.

After completing the program earlier this year, Glen Eira City Council adopted a new framework for issuing footpath trading permits.

Improving the business experience

The new framework has reduced the waiting period for businesses from 126 days to 11 days.

The effectiveness of the Better Approvals Project has prompted the Victorian Government’s Small Business Commission to work with local councils on developing a best-practice approach to supporting their local businesses.

The initiative will foster a fairer and more supportive business environment where small businesses are not unnecessarily hindered by government processes.

By working together with councils to support small businesses, the Government is helping to grow jobs and ensure we have a fair and inclusive economy that benefits all Victorians.

Red tape can be a barrier to growth for small business and that is why they are working with local councils to streamline regulatory processes.

With less time and money required for red tape, small-businesses owners can get on with the task of growing their enterprises and creating jobs for the community.
