Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Information Rudiantara have recently shared that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is interested in the development of Indonesia’s digital economy.

According to a recent press release, the Minister held a bilateral meeting with UAE’s Minister of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Omar Sultan Al Olama during the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting had both leaders discussing the use of AI technology in all fields, particularly on how it can improve public service.

Their discussion included how the government is being left behind by corporations all over the world in terms of using technology, such as AI, in order to improve services to the community.

The two Ministers have agreed to develop initiatives that will reduce the gap between the government and the private sector in the use of technology.

A World Government Summit will be held at the end of 2020 to narrow the gap between the government and the corporations.

It is a global platform dedicated to shaping the future of governments worldwide.

Each year, the Summit sets the agenda for the next generation of governments, focusing on how they can harness innovation and technology to solve universal challenges facing humanity.

The Minister added that UAE’s Minister is interested in the development of the digital economic ecosystem in Indonesia, particularly on the start-up ecosystem.

Indonesia’s start-up ecosystem has produced three unicorns and 1 decacorn and is supported by a large market, with majority coming from millennials and the growth of a new middle class.

Aside from UAE’s interest in Indonesia, another partnership was also formed for the country’s digital economy.

Preventing monopolistic business practices in ICT

As reported, the Ministry signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Business Competition Supervisory Commission in order to monitor unfair business competition, especially in the digital world.

The MoU aims to prevent monopolistic practices and unfair business competition. Additionally, it will allow for the supervision of business partnerships in the field of communication and informatics.

Under the MoU, there will be:

  1. Exchange of data and/or information
  2. Harmonisation of business competition and partnership policies in the field of communication and information technology
  3. Advocacy and dissemination of the principles of fair business competition
  4. Supervision of partnerships in the field of communication and information technology,
  5. Organisation of activities and/or preparation of joint studies and guidelines
  6. Support for resource persons and/or experts and other activities agreed by the parties

Aside from signing a Memorandum of Understanding, the two also signed a Cooperation Agreement on the Prevention and Handling of Monopolistic Practices and Unfair Business Competition and Supervision of Business Partnerships in the Sector Organization of Post and Information Technology.

With the signing of the MoU and the Cooperation Agreement, it is expected that the collaboration between the two will be more proactive in order to create a healthy climate of competition in the communication and information technology industry.
