Master of Fintech Programme Equips Students with AI Skills

Australia’s Swinburne University of Technology has partnered with a global research lab in order to equip the Master of Financial Technologies (FinTech) students with key artificial intelligence (AI) skills for working in the financial services industry.

The new unit called, ‘Artificial Intelligence and Insights’, will reportedly commence in Semester Two 2020 as part of the Master of FinTech, the first postgraduate program of its kind in Australia.

Understanding Emerging AI and Machine Learning Technologies

  • AI and machine learning skills are fundamental core skills that employers now seek in their employees across many industries.
  • The unit will help students understand the characteristics and functionalities of technologies like AI and how they are changing jobs and services in the financial sector.
  • There is a whole structure behind walking into a bank and talking to a chatbot or a machine, for instance, which many people do not understand.
  • The biggest mission of this unit and degree is to be a real eye-opener. It aims to help students understand the mechanisms and technologies behind the innovative services and products available.

Equipping Students with Future-ready Skills

  1. As part of the unit, students will be taught to critically evaluate the role of AI in various contexts related to financial services.
  2. In addition, they will be shown how to apply appropriate techniques and tools to solve financial service problems.
  3. Students will also learn coding basics and gain experience working with data in an AI-driven environment.
  4. It will be valuable for the long term career prospects of the students to be exposed to cutting-edge technological development as well as insight into the company’s way of thinking and problem-solving.
  5. The partnership has provided an opportunity for the company to help create the talent that they can eventually use or tap into in the future.

The Benefits of Course Co-Creation

Co-creation is about safeguarding and securing the relevance of what the University teaches. This model ensures that the course content is up-to-date and reflects the latest research, insights and technological advances.

The co-creation model takes many forms such as sharing of capabilities, technologies, facilities or platforms between the two partners.

There is also the contribution of real-life case studies from industry or the supply of guest speakers for lectures.
