Expanding 5G Networks to Better Philippine Connectivity

In Bacolod City, Boracay, Iloilo City, and Cagayan de Oro, the Philippines’ leading network provider has officially completed site upgrades of its 3G legacy network to 4G LTE, resulting in an improved mobile experience for its consumers. In these crucial places, the corporation also constructed 5G towers, including popular tourist attractions in Malay, Aklan. Cagayan de Oro has completed 180 site enhancements and currently offers 5G coverage in 30 important spots throughout the city.

Furthermore, the network provider has extended 84 sites and installed 13 5G towers in Bacolod City, while 111 sites have been improved and 11 locations are now covered by 5G in Iloilo City. In Boracay, the company has modernised its 32 sites in Balabag, Manoc-Manoc and Yapak. 5G coverage is also now present in the three barangays with Manoc-Manoc having two 5G towers.

“With the 4G LTE network, the customers in Bacolod City, Boracay, Cagayan dae Oro, and in Iloilo City now have access to high-speed internet, clearer calls, and a stable mobile network. We also made 5G available in these four locations for them to maximise the potential and opportunities of the technology,” said Senior Vice President for Programme Delivery, Network Technical Group of the network provider in the Philippines. Customers of network providers across the country are encouraged to check if their SIM cards are 4G-capable to fully enjoy the benefits of 4G.

Ultimately, the network provider is a massive proponent of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 9, which aims to improve infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation, and inspire innovation. The company is dedicated to upholding the ideals of the United Nations Global Compact as well as the UN’s ten Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

OpenGov Asia reported, 5G technology, which is more than ten times faster than 4G, provides faster connectivity speeds, ultra-low latency, more bandwidth, and superior network reliability. This year, the network provider will invest P70 billion to fuel its expansion efforts. According to a network provider in the Philippines, accelerated network rollouts utilising 4G and 5G technologies are starting to pay off. The average fixed broadband download speed has nearly tripled to 66.55 Mbps in June 2021, up from 25.34 Mbps in August 2020. During the same time, average mobile download speeds more than doubled to 32.84 Mbps from 16.44 Mbps.

According to a report, the Philippines’ 5G download speed is now at 141 Mbps, which is among the fastest in the region. The Philippines is among the top Asia-Pacific countries, ranking 6th in download speed and peak download speed. It also placed 8th in 5G upload speed. Recently, the network provider was named the Philippines’ most consistent mobile network for the first quarter of 2021 and leads in 10 of 17 regions in the country in terms of mobile median download speed. The company’s 3.2 Mbps speed in the entertainment ISP Speed Index is comparable to the 3.4 Mbps in the United States.

“Now that we are beginning to enjoy first-world connectivity, it is our commitment to creating a Globe ecosystem to serve our customers better and enrich their lives. Through innovation, we have been able to democratise financial services, primary health care, and e-commerce. It is now accessible and affordable to all,” the Vice President of the company added.

In addition, the country’s telco giant’s corporate arm anticipates the rollout of 5G networks to boost demand for data centres in the Philippines, strengthening the country’s drive to become Asia-next Pacific’s digital hub.

According to the company’s corporate relationship management adviser, the company has been strengthening the country’s global connectivity infrastructure to position it as the next choice geographic destination in Asia-Pacific for global technology giants. He went on to say that 5G will bring denser and faster data streams, making data centres the foundation for future 5G applications.
