Partnership for Growth and Innovation between Singapore and U.S.

Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong and US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo signed a Memorandum of Understanding to implement the Partnership for Growth and Innovation (PGI). The PGI is a bilateral economic cooperation platform aimed at ensuring inclusive growth for the economies and regions by bolstering US-Singapore collaborations in innovative and forward-thinking areas.

Both sides are looking into and increasing collaboration in four areas under the PGI: (a) digital economy and smart cities; (b) energy and environmental technologies; (c) advanced manufacturing and supply chain resilience; and (d) healthcare. In each of these sectors, the US and Singapore are looking for ways to work on technological standards and create more reliable and interoperable systems.

For example, PGI programming is being planned to support the regional development of digital trade standards, expand participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Cross Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) System to facilitate global interoperability between different data privacy regimes, and support the growing need for US and Singapore companies to operationalise trustworthy and responsible AI applications.

The United States and Singapore are co-organising business networking events under the clean energy and environmental technology pillar to facilitate public-private collaboration across the region and increase the adoption, deployment, and trade of clean energy solutions and environmental technologies and services.

  • AI frameworks and toolkits must be in sync

The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) and Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) will work together to build interoperable artificial intelligence governance frameworks and to encourage businesses to embrace ethical AI. With the participation of U.S. and Singapore enterprises, DOC and IMDA will co-organise mapping exercises, workshops, and other activities.

  • A trade mission to Singapore and other markets in the area by the United States to promote advanced manufacturing.

Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), Enterprise Singapore and the Singapore Economic Development Board applaud the Department of Commerce’s intentions to send a senior government official-led Advanced Manufacturing Business Development Mission to Singapore and other regional nations, including Indonesia. The goal of the US trade mission is to establish standards that will increase industrial resiliency and open up new prospects for collaboration between the private sectors in Singapore and the United States.

  • Regional cooperation on cybersecurity in Southeast Asia

Through the ASEAN-Singapore Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence, DOC and MCI seek to collaborate on cybersecurity best practices, including regional capacity building programs on smart cities.

The PGI’s digital component illustrates how our nations’ bilateral ties are progressing in new areas of collaboration. This would allow our enterprises and people to participate equally in the rising digital economy in our nations and regions. The alignment of our separate AI governance frameworks is one tangible illustration of our digital collaboration. Companies may anticipate deploying AI more easily across borders, allowing them to grasp innovative potential while controlling risks. They are re looking forward to seeing meaningful results from our ongoing digital and cyber efforts.

As reported by OpenGov Asia, a new partnership between France and Singapore will increase collaboration in sectors such as smart transportation, smart cities, financial innovation, and agri-food technology. The Digital and Green Partnership (DGP) between France and Singapore will see both nations produce a work plan that includes collaborative initiatives with clear and measurable objectives in the digital and green sectors.

The DGP gives France and Singapore a formal platform to work together on a variety of digital and environmental concerns. The goal is to encourage public-private partnerships and private-sector-led methods that use digital and green technology to boost economies’ competitiveness and generate excellent employment for our people in a long-term way.
