Thailand realises that the digital economy has become a central arena for competition across industries in today’s rapidly evolving global economic landscape. Recognising this trend, the country is making substantial strides in promoting digital infrastructure and enhancing its technological capabilities, creating a fruitful ground for growth and innovation in Thailand’s market.

Thailand’s commitment to digital transformation is driven by the understanding that the digital economy holds immense potential for economic advancement, job creation, and improved quality of life for its citizens.

By embracing digital technologies and fostering a favourable ecosystem for digital innovation, Thailand aims to leverage the power of technology to drive sustainable economic growth and enhance its global competitiveness.

Furthermore, disability is a prevalent social issue within the realm of disability in Thailand, impacting a significant portion of the population. According to the data, it is estimated that around 15% of the Thai population, or approximately 10 million people, have some form of disability. Disabilities in Thailand encompass many conditions, including physical, sensory, intellectual, and mental impairments.

In light of this, Thailand has taken steps to address the needs and rights of individuals with disabilities, particularly in digital technology inclusivity.

Mr Puchpong Nodthaisong, Secretary-General of the National Digital Economy and Society Commission, presided over the inaugural meeting to gather input on the draft ministerial regulations outlining the criteria, procedures, and conditions for providing welfare and other forms of assistance in accessing and utilising digital technology, communication services, and assistive technology for individuals with disabilities.

The meeting was held at the Centra by Centara Hotel in Bangkok. It was attended by representatives from various government agencies, the private sector, and organisations working with people with disabilities, totalling 60 participants.

By adopting the support systems and service models, the regulations will be tailored to suit the unique context of Thailand. It aligns with the National Digital Economy and Society Commission’s (NESDB) overarching mission to foster an innovative environment that promotes widespread and equitable digital inclusion in economic and social activities. The NESDB aims to create a society where digital empowerment is accessible to all individuals, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.

Through this initiative, the NESDB is committed to driving the transformation towards a digitally empowered society where everyone can fully participate and benefit from the advantages offered by digital technologies.

By ensuring that the regulations address the specific needs of individuals with disabilities, the NESDB strives to eliminate barriers and promote equal opportunities for all members of society. The valuable insights and feedback shared during the meeting will contribute significantly to developing comprehensive regulations that promote inclusivity, accessibility, and equal participation in the digital realm.
