Transforming Philippine Healthcare through Wellness

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

With the recent launch of a successful programme, “The Wellness Movement,” the Department of Health (DoH) began publicly adding 7,200 more healthcare workers to the group. The Wellness Movement is an innovative programme that aims to improve the health of medical service workers all over the country.

Using practical applications of scientific behaviour change methodologies, this programme assists doctors, nurses, and allied health personnel in adopting effective wellness behaviours to improve their long-term well-being, aligning with the Department’s 8-point action agenda.

During the event, DoH Assistant Secretary Beverly Lorraine Ho recalled how the Wellness Movement grew over three years. It started with five test hospitals in 2020, grew to 21 hospitals in 2021, and added 28 more hospitals by 2022.

The Wellness Gadgets are the most important part of the programme. These are simple tools that are made to fit into the daily lives and habits of hospital healthcare workers. These useful tools make it easier for them to do good things for their health, like balancing, breathing exercises, and gratitude exercises, at key times of the day.

Because healthcare workers deal with emotional events every day, people who work in the healthcare industry often feel stressed. Wellness items with meditation apps, stress trackers, and biofeedback tools are very helpful. These tools help healthcare workers deal with stress better by showing them how to relax, keeping track of their stress levels, and giving them ways to be more aware.

Long jobs and hard physical work can be bad for the health of people who work in healthcare, hence, wearable devices like smartwatches, exercise trackers, and health monitors can help. By keeping track of vital signs, sleep patterns, and physical exercise, these gadgets let healthcare workers make informed decisions about their health and find health problems early on.

Likewise, healthcare workers often have busy schedules that make it hard for them to make time for physical exercise. Wellness tools save the day by reminding them to move, keeping track of their steps, and letting them make their own workout plans. Even though healthcare workers have busy schedules, these tools push them to exercise regularly.

Wellness tools can help with mental health as well as physical health. Apps with guided meditations, breathing exercises, and tools for mental health support healthcare workers to practice mindfulness and deal with anxiety. These tools have a good effect on their mental health and make them more able to deal with problems.

In addition to the Wellness Gadgets, healthcare workers can share their best practices and life-changing experiences during their wellness journeys in established community support groups. These groups are run through both digital communities online and in-person activities.

Since 2020, the Wellness Movement has been successfully put into place in 50 hospitals. The positive hospital environments that have been created for all workers will soon lead to better mental health. Also mentioned were the training classes for programme leaders that are meant to give them the skills they need to keep the programme going and make it bigger.

Also, the DoH Centre for Health Development showed its support for putting The Wellness Movement into place all over the country. With one voice, they promised that the programme would be supported and kept going in their areas and hospitals.
