In response to the increasing cybersecurity threats in Indonesia, both in the private and public sectors, proactive surveillance and protection are needed to prevent these issues from escalating into more severe problems.

Recently, the National Cyber and Crypto Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (Badan Siber Sandi Negara or BSSN) has organised training, including vulnerability assessments and cyber exercises. These activities are aimed at IT security managers in state-owned enterprises (BUMN), especially in the industrial sector.

This initiative aims to enhance understanding and readiness in the face of evolving cybersecurity threats. Through vulnerability assessments, BSSN assists BUMNs in identifying potential vulnerabilities in their systems, enabling them to take corrective measures.

“As BUMNs play critical roles in various vital sectors such as energy, transportation, finance, and others, cybersecurity in the BUMN sector has a significant impact not only on their businesses but also on the overall economic stability and national security,” explained Hinsa Siburian, Head of BSSN RI.

Hinsa mentioned that the vulnerability assessment programme allows IT security managers in BUMNs to identify and address potential system vulnerabilities before cyberattacks occur proactively. Through cyber exercises, cybersecurity professionals can practice and test their responses to potential cyber emergencies, thus enhancing their preparedness and effectiveness in handling actual cyber incidents.

“When a cyber incident occurs, cooperation and collaboration between BUMNs and BSSN are key to responding quickly and effectively. Enhancing understanding, readiness, and coordination in addressing cybersecurity threats are crucial steps in protecting critical infrastructure and maintaining national stability,” acknowledged Hinsa.

The BUMNs participating in this occasion include PT Pindad, PT Pal, PT DI, PT LEN, PT Dahana, PT Inti, PT Semen Indonesia, Peruri, PT Krakatau Steel, PT Pusri, PT Biofarma, PT Surveyor, PT BKI, PT Sucofindo, PT Waskita Karya, PT Nindya Karya, PT Hutama Karya, PT INKA, PT KBN, PT JIEP, PT DPS, PT Adhi Karya, PT PP, PT Jasamarga, and Perum Perumnas.

Representing the Directorate of Cybersecurity and Industrial Cryptography at BSSN, Catur Agus Sulistyo emphasised that developing human resources capacity in cybersecurity is one of BSSN’s top priorities. It aligns with the understanding that well-trained and skilled human resources are crucial in addressing rapidly evolving cybersecurity threats.

Catur envisioned that after this occasion concludes, a strong partnership and collaboration will be established between BSSN and the industrial sector. It will facilitate coordination and cooperation in the training of cyber incidents in the industrial sector. Consequently, cyberattack responses can be swift and effective, ultimately safeguarding critical infrastructure and sensitive corporate data.

Enhancing human resource capacity in cybersecurity is a positive step towards better security in this challenging digital era. With the growing awareness of the importance of cybersecurity, collaboration between BSSN and the industrial sector will be vital in protecting national assets and addressing evolving cybersecurity threats.

Hinsa believes that through this vulnerability assessment and cyber exercise Indonesia can establish in the face of increasingly complex and widespread cybersecurity challenges across government institutions. It will help maintain the operational continuity of the industrial sector and minimise the negative impacts of cyberattacks.
