Singapore: Unseen Enemy Campaign to Combat Cyber Threats

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

In an era marked by rapid technological advancement and digital integration, the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) has launched its fifth national cybersecurity campaign with a renewed focus on the “Unseen Enemy.”

The campaign aims to raise awareness about the often hidden yet pervasive nature of cyber threats and scams that infiltrate daily lives, underlining the importance of remaining vigilant in the face of these increasingly sophisticated threats.

The campaign was officially launched by Josephine Teo, Minister for Communications and Information and Minister-in-charge of Smart Nation and Cybersecurity, demonstrating the government’s commitment to safeguarding Singapore’s digital landscape.

CSA’s campaign seeks to promote good cyber hygiene practices by emphasising four crucial Cyber Tips:

  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and Use Strong Passphrases: Encouraging individuals to strengthen their online security by enabling 2FA and using robust, unique passphrases for their accounts.
  • Beware of Phishing Scams: Raising awareness about the prevalence of phishing scams and the importance of recognising and avoiding suspicious emails and messages.
  • Update Software Promptly: Stressing the significance of keeping software and applications up to date to prevent vulnerabilities that cybercriminals may exploit.
  • Add ScamShield and Anti-Virus (AV) Apps: Recommend the installation of ScamShield and reputable Anti-Virus apps to protect against various cyber threats.

To disseminate these crucial messages, CSA employs a multi-faceted approach utilising out-of-home and digital platforms. The campaign’s kickoff event, “Home in on Cybersecurity,” is a two-day roadshow designed to mimic a home setting, divided into four zones, each showcasing one of the Cyber Tips.

Visitors are invited to participate in the online game “Phishing Wars,” where they can earn points by identifying signs of phishing in emails and messages. Additionally, an augmented reality experience allows attendees to thwart a cybercriminal, further highlighting the importance of cybersecurity.

Several government agencies, including the Infocomm Media Development Authority’s SG Digital Office, the Singapore Police Force, and the National Crime Prevention Council, had dedicated booths at the event to provide information and support.

The success of this campaign relies on the collaboration of both public and private sector partners, including members of the Cyber Security Awareness Alliance, e-commerce platforms, and online content creators. Together, they will leverage their extensive networks to amplify the campaign’s message and promote the adoption of good cyber habits among Singaporeans.

In a bid to assist the public in selecting suitable Anti-Virus (AV) apps to secure their mobile devices, CSA has curated a list of seven AV apps for both Android and iOS devices. These apps offer features such as malware and phishing detection capabilities to protect users against mobile security threats. The list includes both paid and free versions, ensuring accessibility for individuals with varying budgets and needs.

David Koh, Chief Executive of CSA, emphasised the importance of developing good cyber hygiene habits in daily life, drawing parallels with other ingrained habits like locking doors and looking both ways before crossing the road.

He highlighted the ever-evolving strategies employed by cybercriminals in their nefarious activities; and emphasised the necessity for individuals to adopt a proactive stance in safeguarding themselves from the perils that lurk in the digital realm.

As Singapore continues to advance technologically and digitally, this national cybersecurity campaign serves as a critical initiative to empower citizens with the knowledge and tools to navigate the digital landscape securely and guard against the “Unseen Enemy” of cyber threats.
