Prime Minister Settha expressed to the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (A.V.A.), which was vital in advancing Thailand’s space industry. While, Minister Supamas highlighted that THEOS-2’s data will play a critical role in effective space management responses to diverse emergencies, with a rapid response time of 5 to 8 days.

The launch of THEOS-2, officially known as the Thailand Earth Observation Satellite 2, occurred at 8:36 a.m. local time in Thailand. The satellite was launched with the countdown, culminating in the satellite’s successful ascent to orbit. Witnesses from Thailand, the French Republic, and interested individuals worldwide joined the event.

Minister Supamas envisioned that THEOS-2 would be the advancement of Thailand, highlighting the mission’s successful launch. Following its launch at 8:36 a.m., the satellite will take over 52 minutes to reach an orbit of 621 kilometres. Subsequently, the satellite will undergo a three-month testing phase with ground stations before becoming fully operational. However, in urgent situations like disasters, THEOS-2 can provide images within 5 to 8 days of entering orbit.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment emphasised the significance of the mission, stressing that it will enhance various aspects of the country. THEOS-2’s data will be instrumental in maintaining up-to-date and accurate information across all regions of Thailand, facilitating efficient space management responses to various emergency scenarios.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Settha Thavisin emphasised the government’s unwavering focus on using science, technology, and innovation to advance national development and enhance the people’s quality of life. THEOS-2’s data will serve as crucial foundational information for multifaceted development, including agricultural management, urban planning, natural resource management, environmental stewardship, water resource management, and natural disaster response, ultimately ensuring the comprehensive well-being of the populace.

Dr Pakorn Apaphan, Director of GISTDA, explained that it would transition into operational mode after the satellite entered orbit. Over the next six months, testing of the control system and communication with ground stations will be conducted to ensure data stability and accuracy.

ISTDA will provide opportunities for various sectors to access the data in the future, enabling further development and commercial services. This initiative is poised to stimulate the nation’s economic growth and catalyse education, research, and innovation in spatial data and space technology, cultivating a new generation of scientists and engineers in related fields.

Prime Minister Settha said that the THEOS-2 satellite is set to play an integral role in shaping Thailand’s future. Its data will be instrumental in planning, decision-making, and policy formulation. As it helps chart the course for the nation’s development, THEOS-2 represents an important step toward fostering a more prosperous and resilient future for Thailand and its people.
