Officials of Zhejiang province, East China, have unveiled a strategic action plan aimed at catapulting the integrated development of virtual reality (VR) and related industries. The plan sets a target of surpassing 100 billion yuan (S$20 billion) in the scale of VR and related sectors by 2027.

This initiative emerges as a cornerstone for driving high-quality development within Zhejiang’s digital economy, with a keen focus on fortifying the entire industrial chain’s supply capabilities and nurturing globally competitive enterprises.

Central to the plan is the propulsion of key core technologies, including real-time rendering, stereoscopic display, human-machine interaction, and high-performance computing, all geared toward attaining international standards. The blueprint outlines establishing a robust VR innovation system, fostering deep collaboration between industry, academia, and research.

The envisioned system is set to yield over 1,000 new patents, actively engage in more than 10 national and industry standards, and cultivate over 30 innovative demonstration application scenarios across diverse sectors such as industrial production, education, cultural tourism, e-commerce, sports, smart cities, and competitive entertainment.

Besides, the plan delineates strategic tasks pivotal for achieving its objectives. This includes promoting the seamless integration of innovation and industrial chains, bolstering industrial competitive advantages, and constructing a gradient cultivation system for enterprises. Platforms for industry agglomeration and development, coupled with the open development of typical application scenarios, are slated to amplify Zhejiang’s presence in the global VR landscape.

Further, Zhejiang commits to an annual cycle of major science and technology projects, to generate globally significant achievements. The province vows to synchronise fiscal policies to propel industrial development, emphasising support for nurturing enterprises involved in VR and facilitating their technological innovation.

Zhejiang’s efforts to advance VR and associated industries represent a strategic move that extends beyond immediate goals. It underscores a profound understanding of the symbiotic relationship between technological innovation and economic growth. By embracing VR, Zhejiang not only pioneers advancements in core technologies but also cultivates a fertile ground for innovation across various sectors.

From revolutionising industrial production to enhancing educational methodologies, cultural tourism experiences, and competitive entertainment landscapes, Zhejiang’s vision aligns seamlessly to drive digital transformation.

Moreover, by actively engaging in the establishment of national and industry standards, Zhejiang positions itself as a thought leader in the global VR discourse. The province’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to technological breakthroughs and patent creation solidifies its role as a hub for cutting-edge industries. In doing so, Zhejiang not only propels its economic growth but also contributes to the broader narrative of technological progress and digital innovation.

Zhejiang Province is strategically embracing the potential of VR, positioning itself as a potential innovator in the digital economy. The province is on the verge of not just adopting but redefining the narrative of innovation in technology.

Zhejiang’s bold move positions it as a potential paradigm setter, providing a model for other regions navigating the complex digital landscape. This proactive approach signifies Zhejiang’s commitment to shaping technological trends and leading in the dynamic field of the digital economy, making it a noteworthy contender in the global arena of technological progress.
