Generative AI Empowering Education in Thailand

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Khon Kaen University’s (KKU) workshop on Generative AI has positioned the institution at the forefront of educational innovation, heralding a new era in learning processes. This transformative initiative, held in December 2023, drew a diverse audience of more than 50 participants, including lecturers, staff members, and students.

Generative AI, a subset of AI that creates new content, has several potential applications in educational institutions. Some of the use cases include creating virtual tutoring environments, generating teaching materials such as questions, exercises, and explanations, and producing additional multimedia content for online courses. Generative AI can also be used to create images, assist in research, and enhance productivity across institutions.

While it offers various benefits, its use should be accompanied by an understanding of when and how to use it effectively, considering factors such as academic integrity and ethical use. In Thailand alone, Generative AI is being recognised among the education institutions. KKU’s workshop on the ethical use of Generative AI for its students was timely and pertinent against this backdrop.

Assoc Prof Supat Seenawat, PhD, the Director of KKU Library, articulated the workshop’s objective, rooted in the university’s vision to ascend to a world-class leading research institution. The overarching mission is to cultivate a learning environment that supports a comprehensive learning process for individuals across all levels, ensuring that students, staff, lecturers, and the broader community acquire the requisite skills for the 21st Century.

Under the guidance of experts from within and outside the university, the workshop delved into the practical applications of Generative AI. The technology, encapsulated in tools, offers participants a dynamic set of capabilities to augment their learning experiences. While the theoretical foundations were covered, the workshop prioritised hands-on training to empower participants in crafting personal assistants tailored to their specific needs.

Assoc Prof Kanda Saikaew, PhD, Deputy Director of KKU Library for Digital Technology and Innovation, played a pivotal role in facilitating the understanding and utilisation of Generative AI tools. Renowned for their speed, relevance, and time-saving attributes, these tools are designed to equip users with the essential skills deemed imperative for success in the contemporary landscape.

“The workshop serves as a nexus between theory and practical application, ensuring participants not only comprehend the potential of Generative AI but can actively integrate it into their daily educational practices,” asserted Assoc Prof Kanda Saikaew.

Mrs Phanit Khatnak, a Public Relations Officer of the Communications Division and a workshop participant, provided insights into the transformative experience. Describing the workshop as both challenging and enriching, Mrs Khatnak highlighted its value in imparting knowledge and skills related to Generative AI. The understanding gained regarding the new learning process and advanced technologies showcased the workshop’s impactful nature.

Furthermore, the workshop served as a dynamic networking platform, fostering cross-faculty and cross-departmental exchanges among participants. Mrs Khatnak expressed her commitment to applying the knowledge and skills acquired during the workshop to enhance personal and organisational growth, emphasising the practical implications of this educational endeavour.

In terms of new data, it is noteworthy that the workshop witnessed a diverse range of participants, reflecting the university’s commitment to inclusivity and collaborative learning. The active engagement of lecturers, staff members, and students underscores the universality of the initiative, reaching across different educational roles and levels. This diverse participation not only enriches the learning experience but also contributes to a more holistic integration of Generative AI across various facets of the educational landscape.

Khon Kaen University’s workshop on Generative AI not only signifies an approach to education but also reinforces the institution’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements. By offering participants a blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, the workshop paves the way for a future where technology seamlessly intertwines with education, creating a more dynamic and adaptive learning environment for all stakeholders.
