AI Transforming Healthcare in Indonesia

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The healthcare sector has undergone profound transformations owing to unprecedented technological advancements. Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud computing has reshaped the landscape of healthcare services and marked a notable shift towards heightened efficiency and effectiveness. This transformation is particularly evident in telehealthcare services, where the seamless deployment of AI has brought about innovative solutions and improved patient outcomes.

The infusion of AI into healthcare practices goes beyond merely streamlining traditional medical approaches; it has become a catalyst for delivering remote healthcare services with unparalleled precision. Leveraging advanced algorithms and machine learning capabilities, healthcare professionals can remotely diagnose, monitor, and customise personalised patient treatment plans. This capability transcends geographical limitations, ushering in a new era of accessible and patient-centric healthcare.

In Indonesia alone, intelligent and comprehensive healthcare services are becoming increasingly tangible. One of the academicians, Professor Dr I Ketut Eddy Purnama ST MT, holding the position of the 188th Professor at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), has committed to spearheading a transformative shift towards modernised healthcare services through the strategic integration of health informatics.

Recognising the profound impact of technological advancements, Prof Eddy envisioned a healthcare landscape in Indonesia characterised by efficiency, patient-centricity, and technical advancement. As he explains, health informatics is a multidisciplinary field encompassing information technology and telecommunications, overseeing critical processes such as data acquisition, processing, storage, and transmission.

Prof Eddy underscored the inseparable role of telematics from computer systems, software, and hardware, emphasising its potential integration into healthcare for facilitating services and diagnosing patients. The scope of health telematics extends to diverse areas, including medical informatics, blockchain for medical data security, medical data visualisation, and more, all aimed at providing practical and modern healthcare services to the public.

In his academic oration, Prof Eddy unveiled two groundbreaking scientific innovations within health telematics. The first innovation revolves around creating a framework for obtaining three-dimensional shapes of the human spine using ultrasound. This framework, designed for monitoring the development of scoliosis, employs the Free-hand 3D Ultrasound System (FH-3D US), which comprises a conventional ultrasound machine, a tracker with markers, and a computer system.

The framework progresses through four volume reconstruction stages: bin filling, hole filling, volume segment alignment, and volume segment compounding. Prof Eddy’s innovative approach demonstrates that ultrasound imaging of the human spine can be achieved, presenting a significant advancement in healthcare diagnostics.

The second scientific innovation presented by Prof Eddy introduced a novel approach to the filtering process for digital image processing called Branches Filtering. This approach is applied to images represented as trees, where each node signifies an area with similar features, such as intensity. This innovative method is particularly suitable for extracting objects in images, provided the object can be recognised through prominent information like intensity, shape, scalar value, or other vector values.

These scientific innovations not only showcase Prof Eddy’s expertise but also solidify his position as a significant contributor to the field of health telematics. His research spans various subfields, including medical image processing and analysis, computer vision, microscopic image processing, robotics, games, and medical data security.

Through these concrete scientific advancements, Prof Eddy envisioned making substantial contributions to the progress of health telematics in Indonesia, expressing sincere gratitude for the golden opportunity to actively contribute to the field’s advancement.

“Health telematics is not merely a technological augmentation but a catalyst for societal well-being,” he asserted. Professor Eddy believed that practical and modern healthcare services, driven by cutting-edge technology, will be more accessible to the public, ensuring that individuals receive timely and tailored care regardless of their geographical location.

By seeing this stride, it becomes evident that the collaboration between academic research, technological innovation, and healthcare delivery is a powerful force shaping the future of medicine.
