U.S: Agile Metabolic Health’s Open-Source Revolution

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Researchers at UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco are leading the charge in advancing diabetes treatment and metabolic health through an open-source platform, the Agile Metabolic Health project. This collaborative initiative, in partnership with the computing and data analysis organisation, and The Commons Project, aims to reshape the healthcare landscape by securely aggregating and analysing health records and data from wearable devices.

The Agile Metabolic Health project, spearheaded by Berkeley’s College of Computing, Data Science, and Society, serves as a paradigm for the transformative potential of open platforms in healthcare. The objective is to create a centralised repository that enables seamless acquisition, analysis, and secure sharing of health data, thereby empowering healthcare professionals to understand better and treat patients. This innovative project has the potential to significantly benefit the more than 38 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes, marking a crucial step toward improving healthcare outcomes.

The timing of this initiative is particularly pertinent in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed systemic gaps in data usability and access within the healthcare system. With recent advancements in artificial intelligence and an open-source approach, there is untapped potential to address these issues, bridging gaps for both patients and healthcare providers.

Professor Ida Sim, co-director of the UCSF/UC Berkeley Joint Programme in Computational Precision Health, emphasised the need for a paradigm shift in health technology. “Health technology has been driven by proprietary, targeted, siloed approaches. It’s a patchwork, and it just isn’t working,” said Sim. The Agile Metabolic Health project represents a commitment to building an alternative that transforms healthcare as a whole.

The potential impact of this initiative extends far beyond diabetes care. The collaborative effort between academic institutions and developers is laying the groundwork for a platform that revolutionises the entire health ecosystem. By leveraging the power of open-source technology, the project aims to streamline healthcare processes, enhance data capacity, and catalyse the creation of startups focused on advancing the healthcare sector.

Fernando Pérez, an associate professor of statistics and co-inventor of the open-source platform, emphasised the need for change in the complex, highly regulated, and labour-intensive healthcare sector. Pérez notes that the Agile Metabolic Health launch signals the maturity of tools and the quality of the team involved in this transformative endeavour.

The project is part of the Open Platforms for Powering Science and Society initiative at Berkeley, which will leverage insights gained from the Agile Metabolic Health project to create new platforms and strategies. These platforms will extend beyond healthcare, influencing data capacity in areas such as basic science, climate and sustainability, and human welfare and social justice.

Diabetes serves as a focal point for this groundbreaking project due to its prevalence and the transformative potential of open-source code, science, and platforms. Traditional medical approaches often rely on broad averages, treating patients based on three-month averages of blood sugar levels. However, with advancements in wearable devices, real-time data on glucose, physical activity, and sleep can provide a more precise understanding of an individual’s health, leading to more effective treatment strategies.

The project team, led by Sim and Pérez, is developing a platform that aims to collect health data securely from various sources, including sensors and medical records. The platform will develop and share digital biomarker algorithms in collaboration with Duke University’s BIG IDEAs Lab, offering validation and deployment in clinical care. This platform has the potential to provide real-time insights to physicians and patients, bringing together previously siloed data and enabling the adoption of third-party healthcare apps.

The Agile Metabolic Health project anticipates that this new data acquisition and user interface solution will be a reality within four years. The platform aims to integrate blood pressure data by 2024, followed by glucose data in subsequent years.

The initiative is not just about revolutionising diabetes care, but, it  also envisions a broader transformation of the healthcare system. This platform once implemented, could streamline the adoption of the latest scientific findings, including AI algorithms, and create universal data solutions for healthcare. Acting as a “middleware” for the industry, the platform could be utilised across healthcare systems and for various patient and clinical scenarios, functioning like the internet for the medical world.

This collaboration signifies a new era in digital health. This platform has the potential to reshape healthcare by offering transparency, accessibility, and collaboration, addressing central societal problems and maximising the value of data and information. The Agile Metabolic Health project is a transformative step towards a future where open platforms play a pivotal role in improving healthcare outcomes and addressing broader societal challenges.
