The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) of Indonesia has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to advancing digital technology and innovation at the recent APEC Policy Partnership in Science Technology and Innovation (PPSTI) meeting. This significant forum took place in Lima, Peru, spanning almost two weeks. BRIN, serving as Indonesia’s National Focal Point for APEC PPSTI, seized the opportunity to present two pivotal topics aimed at driving economic growth and fostering innovation in the APEC region.

BRIN’s active participation in the APEC PPSTI meeting underscored Indonesia’s strong commitment to advancing digital innovation and capacity building in the region. Among the significant topics presented by BRIN was a strategic initiative aimed at accelerating digital competence for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the APEC region.

This initiative seeks to bolster the digital skills and capabilities of MSMEs, recognising their pivotal role in propelling economic growth and fostering job creation across the region. By focusing on enhancing the digital proficiency of MSMEs, BRIN is not only contributing to the empowerment of these enterprises but also to the overall digital transformation and resilience of the APEC economies.

Yurike Patricia Marpaung, a representative of the Indonesian delegation, highlighted the importance of providing MSMEs with access to training programmes, workshops, and digital resources to improve their competitiveness in the digital economy. Additionally, expert engagement meetings will be held to facilitate the sharing of strategies and policies among APEC economies, enabling MSMEs to overcome challenges and adopt best practices in digital transformation.

The second topic presented by BRIN focused on diversifying the semiconductor supply chain to accelerate economic growth, particularly for developing countries in the APEC region.

Yurike outlined the challenges confronting the semiconductor industry, citing supply chain disruptions and heightened demand for specialised semiconductors as key issues. To tackle these obstacles, BRIN has introduced a set of initiatives geared towards bolstering the resilience and sustainability of the semiconductor supply chain. These initiatives encompass fostering greater collaboration among APEC economies and allocating resources towards research and development (R&D) to drive the creation of novel technologies and processes.

BRIN’s active engagement in the APEC PPSTI meeting not only underscored its commitment to advancing technological innovation but also emphasised its dedication to promoting open science and transparency in research practices. During the meeting, Yurike showcased BRIN’s pioneering initiative, the Scientific Repository (RIN), which stands as a cutting-edge digital platform designed to streamline the storage, preservation, citation, and analysis of research data. By providing researchers and institutions with a centralised hub for accessing and sharing research findings, RIN plays a pivotal role in fostering collaboration and driving scientific progress. Its role as a catalyst for the advancement of scientific knowledge underscores BRIN’s pivotal position in the global scientific community.

Further, BRIN expressed its support for the Open Science Alliance programme initiated by the Malaysian economy. Yurike emphasised the importance of collaboration and collective contribution in building the alliance, which aims to promote open science and enhance research collaboration among APEC economies.

In addition to its initiatives in digital technology and open science, BRIN highlighted its international research collaboration scheme, which aims to encourage collaboration among researchers from different institutions and disciplines. Through this scheme, BRIN seeks to promote innovation and knowledge exchange on a global scale, fostering partnerships that drive economic growth and sustainability.

BRIN’s participation in the APEC PPSTI meeting demonstrates its commitment to advancing digital technology, promoting open science, and fostering international research collaboration. By leveraging these initiatives, BRIN aims to drive economic growth, foster innovation, and create a more sustainable future for the APEC region and beyond.

Looking ahead, BRIN is poised to continue its leadership in promoting innovation and sustainable development in the semiconductor industry. The initiatives proposed at the APEC PPSTI meeting reflect BRIN’s commitment to addressing the challenges facing the semiconductor supply chain, and its focus on collaboration and investment in R&D bodes well for the industry’s future.
