PANDI’s Vision: Empowering Indonesia’s Digital Sovereignty

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Indonesian Internet Domain Name Administrator (PANDI) aims for 1.2 million .id domain names to be in use both nationally and internationally by 2024. PANDI’s Chairman, John Sihar Simanjuntak, stated that this goal is realistic, considering the significant increase in the use of the .id domain in 2023. “We expect that the .id domain names in use can reach 1.2 million by 2024,” said John.

John mentioned that throughout 2023, as of December 31, 2023, the domain was used by 951,421 users, an increase of 31% from 2022, with a total of 726,305 users. He noted that the most significant user increase in 2023 was in the business domain, biz. id, which grew by 511% to 96,218 users. Previously, in 2022, the number of users for this domain was only around the tens of thousands, specifically 18,846.

To achieve this target, John has announced plans to discuss the important concept of “Indonesia’s Digital Sovereignty” in depth at the PANDI Meeting. This initiative marks a strategic and significant step in affirming Indonesia’s position in the digital realm, particularly through the management of the national internet domain, .id, which is considered the digital boundary of Indonesia.

John expressed how crucial this initiative is for PANDI as the official registry of the .id domain name. He emphasised that realising Indonesia’s digital sovereignty is a top priority, where the management of the .id domain plays a key role in creating Indonesia’s differentiation in the internet world.

To encourage active participation and collaboration among actors in various sectors, PANDI invites all stakeholders in the industry and internet governance in Indonesia to create an inclusive forum. This includes multiple activities such as seminars, talk shows, targeted group discussions, and strategic policy meetings aimed at enriching dialogue and cooperation across sectors.

“Therefore, in 2024, we also expect an increase in exposure in the international market by 5%. Considering the global market size for domains reaches 707 million, with a 5% share of that, we feel the exposure is already significant, which later can trigger more use of the .id domain not only nationally but also globally,” said John.

In addition to targeting more adoption of the .id domain name, PANDI will also innovate to create a digital identity utilising the .id domain based on blockchain technology.

John highlighted the urgency of building and developing a strong and reliable digital identity as the foundation for achieving digital sovereignty. In response to this, PANDI has taken a proactive step by designing a digital identity system based on blockchain technology in collaboration with various related government agencies. This system is expected to enhance security, transparency, and efficiency in managing the digital identities of Indonesian citizens.

The PANDI Meeting activity becomes an important event to convey and disseminate the idea of “Indonesia’s Digital Sovereignty.” This event has attracted attention and received positive responses from various stakeholders, including the government, industry, academia, and representatives of civil society. This success indicates a shared awareness and commitment to advancing and strengthening the internet ecosystem in Indonesia as a foundation for achieving the desired digital sovereignty.

John revealed that the latest innovation from PANDI has been named “ID Wallet”. Adding more details, he revealed that PANDI is currently conducting in-depth research and analysis on the implementation and potential of ID Wallet as part of the digital identity infrastructure.

This research, according to John, is being prepared to be released in the form of a white paper, which will present findings, analysis, and recommendations related to the development and implementation of ID Wallet. The main goal of this initiative is to facilitate the integration of digital identity in various aspects of societal life in cyberspace, thus improving ease of access, security, and user privacy.

“The existence of ID Wallet will benefit the community from a more integrated and efficient system in managing their digital identity in cyberspace, which will ultimately support the creation of a safer, more transparent, and reliable digital ecosystem,” explained John.

Thus, John is optimistic that PANDI, through the discourse and collaboration established in this meeting, innovative strategies and creative solutions, will emerge to address challenges and seize opportunities in the digital era.
