Propelling Autonomous Vehicle Research in Indonesia

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Research Centre for Telecommunication (PRT) of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has entered into a cooperation agreement with the Indonesian Educational University (UPI) in Purwakarta. This collaboration focuses on advancing research in the application of object detection and telecommunications systems for autonomous electric vehicles. Additionally, the agreement encompasses the development of methods and electronic networks for security, motion control, and steering systems for three-wheeled autonomous electric vehicles operating in limited environments.

Nasrullah Armi, Head of the Research Centre for Telecommunication emphasised that the cooperation aims to harness available resources to propel advancements in science and technology. Specifically, the focus is on developing sophisticated object detection systems and telecommunications frameworks for autonomous electric vehicles. Furthermore, it aims to create robust methods and electronics for security systems, motion control, and steering mechanisms for three-wheeled autonomous electric vehicles in confined environments.

Prof Yayan Nurbayan, Director of UPI Purwakarta clarified, “This collaborative effort should intensify and focus our research endeavours, addressing the challenges we face. Prof Yayan also underscored the importance of BRIN’s expertise, anticipating that the collaboration would guide students and offer them valuable research experience under the supervision of experts.

Arief Suryadi Satyawan, the research coordinator, shared similar sentiments, noting that the cooperation agreement would be beneficial for both faculty and students. “The research themes focus on developing object detection and telecommunications systems for autonomous electric vehicle applications, as well as methods and electronics for security systems, motion control, and steering in limited environments,” he explained.

Currently, several undergraduate students from UPI Purwakarta’s Telecommunication Studies Programme are already actively participating in the research. They are working on developing the concept of H265 video encoding technology and super-resolution video applications for visual communication in autonomous electric vehicles. This hands-on involvement is providing the students with practical experience and the opportunity to contribute to significant technological advancements.

This collaboration represents a pivotal step towards integrating academic research with practical applications in the automotive and telecommunications industries. It is poised to generate innovative solutions that align with national priorities and drive technological progress in Indonesia. Through this partnership, the institutions aim to create a synergy that not only addresses current industry challenges but also prepares a skilled workforce capable of leading future technological advancements.

The research collaboration is expected to pave the way for significant developments in autonomous vehicle technology. By leveraging the expertise of BRIN and the academic resources of UPI Purwakarta, the project aims to make substantial contributions to the field. The focus on object detection and telecommunications systems is particularly pertinent, given the increasing reliance on advanced technologies for vehicle automation and safety.

The development of methods and electronics for security, motion control, and steering systems will enhance the functionality and reliability of autonomous electric vehicles, making them viable for use in various environments, including the new capital area (IKN).

As the project progresses, the anticipated outcomes include the publication of international scientific papers, the filing of patents, and the development of new technologies that can be commercialised and deployed within Indonesia’s burgeoning vehicle industry. These achievements will not only contribute to the nation’s technological landscape but also reinforce Indonesia’s position as a leader in the field of autonomous vehicle research and development.

The Cooperation Agreement between the Research Centre for Telecommunication (PRT) of BRIN and UPI Purwakarta represents a significant milestone in the advancement of autonomous electric vehicle technology in Indonesia. Through collaborative research and the integration of academic and industry expertise, the partnership aims to deliver innovative solutions that address national priorities and drive technological progress. The involvement of students in this cutting-edge research further underscores the commitment to developing a skilled and knowledgeable workforce capable of leading future advancements in the field.
