Mr Sombun Mekpaiboonwattana, a digital technology and communication management specialist, along with a delegation of civil servants and officials from the Office of the National Digital Economy (ONDE), visited and monitored the progress of four Community Digital Centres in Trang Province. Their visit aimed to boost the morale of school personnel and staff at these centres, which play a crucial role in enhancing digital literacy and providing valuable learning resources for students and residents.

The Community Digital Centres serve as vital hubs for learning, providing students and residents with access to digital resources that enhance their studies, increase their knowledge, and improve the overall quality of life within the community. These centres were established as part of the government’s “Thailand 4.0” policy, which aims to use digital technology to drive the economy and society. Since 2023, the centres have fostered digital literacy and inclusion under Chaiwut Thanakmanusorn, the former Minister of Digital Economy and Society

The centres cater to children, teenagers, and adults alike, emphasising lifelong education and Internet commerce to drive local economies. Improving internet availability helps close the digital divide and provides residents with greater access to data and government services.

The government’s efforts to encourage the widespread use of digital technology have resulted in a more equitable distribution of digital infrastructure, allowing more community members to reap its benefits.

The delegation visited the following Community Digital Centres:

  1. Bang Dee Witthayakhom School in Tambon Bang Dee, Amphoe Huai Yot.
  2. Ban Wang Lam School in Tambon Wang Khiri, Amphoe Huai Yot.
  3. Ban Huai Ret School in Tambon Nam Phut, Mueang District.
  4. Ban Nong Ria School in Tambon Na La, Mueang District.

During the visit, Mr Sombun highlighted the importance of these centres in bridging the digital divide and fostering an environment where everyone can benefit from digital technologies. He underscored that the centres have computers, internet access, and digital tools to support educational activities and community development.

The delegation interacted with school personnel to understand their needs and challenges, offering support and guidance to ensure the centres operated effectively. This engagement helped boost the staff’s morale and underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing digital literacy and education in rural areas.

Moreover, the visit included discussions on plans to expand and improve the facilities at these centres. Mr Sombun and the ONDE officials shared their vision for integrating more advanced technologies and providing ongoing training for teachers and staff to use these resources better. This strategic approach aims to ensure that the Community Digital Centres continue to evolve and meet the growing demands of digital education.

The visit also showcased the success stories and positive impacts these centres have had on the local communities. Many students and residents have benefited from access to digital tools and resources, leading to improved academic performance, greater technological proficiency, and enhanced personal and professional development opportunities.

As a stride toward advancing the digital transformation in Thailand, Mr Sombun believes that the Community Digital Centres represent a pivotal component in the nation’s digital strategy. He underscored that these centres address immediate educational needs and lay the groundwork for long-term socioeconomic development. By providing access to technology and digital resources, these centres empower individuals to participate more fully in the digital economy, fostering a culture of innovation and self-sufficiency.
