State-owned telecommunications company Telkom, Telkomsel, has just announced its readiness as the first company in Indonesia capable of offering exceptional connectivity speeds and Wi-Fi 7 technology to its customers. This is a significant step in Indonesia’s digital transformation, with Telkomsel at the forefront of network technology innovation.
Telkomsel’s move is supported by the trials and validation of Wi-Fi 7 technology conducted together with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kemenkominfo). “Collaborating with Kominfo and several global technology partners, we continue to strive to create breakthroughs that can drive the advancement of the digital ecosystem and the transformation of Indonesia’s telecommunications industry,” said Telkomsel’s Vice President of Technology Strategy and Consumer Product Innovation, Ronald Limoa.
Wi-Fi 7, introduced in early 2024, is the latest evolution of Wi-Fi technology. It promises higher internet speeds, greater user capacity, lower latency, and better energy efficiency compared to its predecessor, Wi-Fi 6. In trials conducted with Low Power Indoor (LPI) device specifications, Telkomsel and Kemenkominfo found that the functionality and capabilities of Wi-Fi 7 showed significant performance and stability, exceeding initial expectations.
Through trials conducted with several global technology partners, Telkomsel and Kominfo have made significant achievements in Indonesia’s journey toward the era of high-speed internet networks. Director of Resource Management at the Directorate General of SDPPI, Kemenkominfo, Denny Setiawan, stated that these trials provide telecommunications providers with the opportunity to test innovations that can enhance service quality for the Indonesian public. He hopes that when this technology is implemented, it can accelerate the achievement of Indonesia Digital Vision 2045. “This continuous collaboration is expected to help accelerate the achievement of Indonesia Digital Vision 2045,” said Denny.
With the increasing demands of productivity and digital lifestyles, faster and more stable Wi-Fi 7 technology can enhance smoothness and efficiency. This provides a network experience that meets the need for high-speed internet connections, especially for people working from home or the office.
Wi-Fi 7 not only allows for faster connections but also supports more devices simultaneously without compromising speed or connection quality. This is crucial given the increasing number of smart devices and IoT (Internet of Things) used in everyday life.
The government envisions that Indonesia can also adopt and leverage continuous global innovations. This includes contributing to the device ecosystem involving domestic industries. The use of advanced technology, such as Wi-Fi 7, is expected to drive local industry growth, create new jobs, and enhance Indonesia’s competitiveness on the global stage.
On the other hand, frequency regulation will continue to be updated following technological developments to ensure the Indonesian nation’s competitiveness. The government will continue to work with various parties to ensure that Indonesia not only follows technological developments but also leads in the application and innovation of digital technology.
Wi-Fi 7 offers enormous potential for the future of digital connectivity in Indonesia. With the ability to provide much better speed and efficiency, this technology can play a key role in achieving Indonesia’s Digital Vision 2045. The government, telecommunications service providers, and the technology industry must continue to collaborate to ensure that Indonesia can fully capitalise on the opportunities offered by this technology.
With Telkomsel’s bold step to implement Wi-Fi 7 technology, Indonesia is on the right track to lead in digital transformation in the Southeast Asian region. This will not only improve the quality of life for its people but also pave the way for greater innovation and economic growth. Collaboration between the government, industry, and society will be the key to success in achieving the 2045 vision.
