State Government of Sarawak

Mr Kamaruddin Bin Mohamad, Head of Digital Government Division

OpenGov Asia is recognising the State Government of Sarawak for its steadfast role in the actualisation of Sarawak’s digital economy and IoT. The Sarawak Government is adamant with going for digital economy because it is projected that by 2025, digitalisation will be able to create one million job opportunities in Malaysia, bringing economic and social benefits to the people in the country, particularly in Sarawak.
To become a leader in digitalisation, full support will be given to provide better internet coverage and speed. RM500 million has been allocated to add to the state’s budget of RM1 billion to upgrade and construct internet and communication infrastructures in the state.
In line with this economic direction, capacity development programmes are scheduled focusing on strengthening organisational excellence for a digital economy. Programmes include trainings, workshops, seminars, forums, lectures and best practice visits. In 2017, 76 capacity development programmes were held involving 2,241 participants, which is 3 times more than the 778 participants of 2016. This is indicative of the commitment and cooperation of the participants and their respective organisations.
