Fostering a secure future for educational environments

The infusion of technology paves the way for innovative advancements in the swiftly evolving realm of smart education, yet it concurrently introduces fresh challenges, particularly in cybersecurity.

As educational institutions pivot towards digital platforms for teaching, cybercriminals are targeting these systems, exploiting vulnerabilities in the virtual learning environment. The risks in smart education span from denial-of-service attacks (DOS) to sophisticated malware and traditional phishing attempts.

The Philippines encounters several hurdles in smart education, including inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, and insufficient regulations hindering the integration and implementation of educational technologies. Additionally, educational institutions face risks such as data breaches, cyberbullying, ransomware, spyware, and denial-of-service attacks.

These cyber risks can have an impact on an institution’s intellectual capital, financial resources, reputational image, and operational continuity, as well as the privacy, security, and well-being of its students, teachers and staff.

In 2021, the University of the Philippines (UP) acknowledged that it had been the victim of a data breach that exposed the personal information of students, teachers, staff, and alumni. The data breach appeared to be carried out by a local hacker group that claimed to have had access to the UP database since 2018.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) reported around 3,000 “high-level cyberattacks” in the Philippines between 2020 and 2022, with almost half directed at government agencies, emergency response teams, and educational institutions. Alongside these attacks, the DICT also monitored 54,000 cyber threats within the same timeframe.

In the context of these challenges, the education sector is compelled to address: How can artificial intelligence be used to counter evolving threats in the educational environment?

AI solutions have emerged as a pivotal strategy in the swiftly evolving cybersecurity landscape within the educational sector, offering a crucial means to combat and evolve alongside the ever-changing spectrum of cyber threats.

Leveraging AI empowers educational institutions to deploy a proactive, adaptable, and efficient cybersecurity infrastructure tailored to their unique requirements and hurdles, fostering a secure and nurturing digital learning ecosystem.

Endpoint protection solution

Endpoint protection solutions serve as a crucial element in fortifying the cybersecurity stance of educational institutions. These programmes, safeguarding PCs, laptops and mobile devices – referred to as endpoints – play a pivotal role in defending against diverse online threats, especially in the education sector with its dispersed and varied networks.

Blending built-in hardware with cloud technology

Half of all critical information is currently housed in unsecured desktops and laptops, but advancements in technology empower remote IT departments to secure data stored on these deployed devices, effectively thwarting cyberattacks aimed at enterprises.

By integrating the benefits of physical hardware and cloud-based solutions, enterprises can achieve a more comprehensive and efficient security for their assets and data. This unified approach enables cost-effective resource allocation, shared threat intelligence, real-time monitoring, while also enhancing scalability and flexibility.

The session will explore:

  • The potential of AI in transforming operations, particularly in real-time decision-making
  • AI strategies to revolutionise learning outcomes and prioritise user experience
  • Innovative solutions to enhance performance, secure ecosystems and drive efficiency
  • End-to-end security to safeguard users and data
