Accelerating Digital Transformation: Optimising Operations, Securing Assets and Managing your Journey to the Cloud

To drive the country’s smart nation goal, the government would need to “re-engineer” its systems and processes.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong
The fourth industrial revolution is now upon us, Big Data, Data Lakes, Data Hubs, the Internet of Things, Hybrid Clouds, Hyper-converged Infrastructure, & Smart Cities are all coming together heralding the new age of digital transformation.
Governments are no longer standing idly by, examples like the Singapore Government are demonstrating the value to the world and their constituents why being an early adopter of these technologies truly enables a digitally transformed society.
With newer workforce inhabitants like millennials and Generation Z, the younger entrants are now beginning to enter the workforce, converging with traditional cultures, legacy IT systems, and experienced professionals it is now more pressing than ever to ensure governments are poised to lead their nations in the Industry 4.0 revolution endeavour.
A key focus area for the government will be designing a set of systems that integrates data across legacy siloed IT systems across multiple agencies to produce results enabling leaders to make more intelligent decisions while simultaneously improving government’s operational efficiencies providing better and more improved services to its citizens.
Re-engineering the processes
The Singapore Government is expected to move most of its IT systems to commercial cloud services over the next five years. This is part of ongoing efforts to deliver citizen services more efficiently while reducing the costs required to deliver such services, by utilising data hubs that enable seamless integration between cloud services and providers creating a multi-cloud enabled approach.
Speaking at GovTech’s Stack 2018 event, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong mentioned that the Government will begin to migrate some systems onto the cloud. As it gains experience in this mode of operation, the Government will take bolder steps in light of what has been learnt.
The move to cloud platforms is a promising strategy many organisations are adopting regardless of sector. Not only are they a coping mechanism, cloud platforms have proved instrumental to support innovative and disruptive applications such as the Internet of Things, robotics and automation. For the public sector, cloud platforms resolve age-old challenges while accentuating pressing concerns.
Governments stand to benefit the most from cloud services which are time-saving and cost-efficient. Most importantly, cloud services have the potential to deliver seamless services, raising citizen satisfaction.
In his own words, the Prime Minister cited reasons of lowered IT costs “by orders of magnitude”. Hence, the Government could scale up or down its services easily.
Yet, concerns over security and data protection loom no matter how promising cloud platforms can be.
“It was not a question of whether the government will use the cloud, but to what extent the cloud can be used with minimal risks,” remarked the Prime Minister.
Alongside these major considerations, these questions remain when migrating to the cloud:
OpenGov invites you to discuss these areas of concern to a closed door, invitation only Breakfast Insight session which will be a concise, focused, strategic level discussion designed to enrich learning within a short span of just 3 hours!
You will hear an expert presentation by our international speaker Bas Wilson via video conferencing.
